COMPRESSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ON BRACKET
Note. On vehicles with 6 cylinder engine, the compressor can be removed and installed at the bracket without opening the refrigerant lines. If the vehicle has an 8 cylinder engine, it is necessary to open the refrigerant circuit in order to remove the A/C compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR . For vehicles with 6 cylinder engine, discharge refrigerant circuit for the removal only if the compressor is to be removed, only disconnect refrigerant hoses and refrigerant lines from compressor only when refrigerant circuit has been discharged. After removal fasten compressor to longitudinal using e.g. a wire. Never leave hanging from refrigerant pipes. Before removing ribbed belt, mark the running direction with chalk or felt-tip pen, a reversed running direction on a used belt may destroy it. Depending on engine and country version, different compressors can be installed (6 or 8 cylinder engine, gasoline or diesel). Do not bend, kink or stretch lines or hoses as refrigerant lines and refrigerant hoses may be damaged.
Removing
Note. Do not loosen refrigerant lines. An A/C compressor on a 6 cylinder TDI vehicle is shown in the illustration. The arrangement on other 6 cylinder engine versions deviates only slightly from this illustration. Refer to [For engine(s) BHK] Removal and Installation or [For engine(s) CATA] Removal and Installation or [For engine(s) CJWC, CJWB] Removal and Installation (e.g. different refrigerant lines, or no Refrigerant Temperature Sensor -G454- installed, Refer to the appropriate System Wiring information. Depending on version of vehicle, it may be necessary to push aside or disconnect individual hose lines that are routed in the vicinity of the compressor. As opposed to the description below, the compressor can also be removed upward when refrigerant circuit has been discharged on vehicles with 6 cylinder TDI engine. However, the power steering pump must be removed (refer to Removal and Installation ) and refrigerant lines disconnected from compressor before the removal upward, refer to COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT LINES, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
Remove noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .
Remove left front wheel housing liner (6 cylinder TDI engine only). Refer to Removal and Installation .
Remove the air guide hose (6 cylinder TDI engine only) -arrows-.

Mark running direction of ribbed belt -E- e.g. using chalk.

Release tension on ribbed belt -E- and remove it. Refer to [For engine(s) BHK] Removal and Installation or [For engine(s) CATA] Removal and Installation or [For engine(s) CJWC, CJWB] Removal and Installation .
Remove power steering pump (6 cylinder gasoline engine only), refer to Removal and Installation .
Disconnect the connector from the Refrigerant Temperature Sensor -G454- -2- (if equipped). Refer to REFRIGERANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR G454 .

Note. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines -2- and -3- from compressor as long as refrigerant circuit remains charged (if e.g. intending only to loosen compressor from bracket). If compressor is to be removed, first discharge refrigerant circuit and only then disconnect refrigerant lines -2- and -3- from compressor COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT LINES, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING . Do not bend, kink or stretch lines or hoses as refrigerant lines and refrigerant hoses may be damaged.
Remove retaining clamps -1- and -5-.
Pull coolant hose out of retainer on longitudinal member.
Mark the connector to A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280- -1- (e.g. because of danger of interchanging with connector to electric engine mount).

Note. If connectors to A/C Compressor Regulator Valve and to electric engine mount are interchanged, no DTC is entered in DTC memory (the electrical values of these components are about the same), however the evaporator may ice-up since the compressor is actuated continuously.
Unscrew three bolts -arrows-.
Remove A/C compressor toward left wheel housing (6 cylinder TDI engine) or toward front (6 cylinder gasoline engine).
Note. Compressor bracket -D- remains in the vehicle, removing and installing compressor bracket, refer to [For engine(s) BHK] Removal and Installation or [For engine(s) CATA] Removal and Installation or [For engine(s) CJWC, CJWB] Removal and Installation .
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order while noting the following
- Always clean contact surfaces on bracket on compressor.
- Install the bushings -C- into the A/C compressor bracket. Be careful of the correct allocation because there are different versions.
- Install one washer each -B- at bolts -A-.
- Install bolts -A- (tightening torque 25 Nm).
- Before fastening the compressor, check that both bushings -C- in compressor bracket are seated correctly.
- After fastening the compressor, check installation position of refrigerant lines, lines must be engaged in bracket (if installed, depending on engine).
- After attaching compressor, also check refrigerant pipes and corresponding holders for adequate clearance with respect to other components, ensuring sufficient distance between belt, holder and pulley.
- Install the ribbed belt -E-. Install remaining components.
Note. Note tightening torques of the removed bolts and nuts.
Check the DTC memory for the Climatronic Control Module and erase any faults displayed if necessary using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.
