DRIVE BELT INSPECTION

  1. Using a crayon or other marker, mark direction of belt travel before removing belt (if reusing belt). If reinstalled in opposite direction, damage to belt will occur.
  2. Remove drive belt guard. Using a 10-mm wrench, rotate drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove drive belt. Hold tensioner in place with Holding Mandrel (V.A.G. 3204). (Scheme 1)
  3. Ensure belt has no splits, cracks or other damage. To install drive belt, reverse removal procedure. Place drive belt over drive rollers and idling roller first and onto tensioning roller last. Using a 10-mm wrench, remove holding mandrel and allow tensioning roller to move against belt. Install drive belt guard.

IGNITION TIMING

Note. Ignition timing, idle speed and mixture are controlled by the PCM, and are not adjustable.

Basic Setting

  1. Lock camshafts at TDC No. 3 cylinder using Timing Fixture (V.A.G. 3243). Locating plates are used to position camshafts. Each locating plate has a large hole and a small hole. When installing timing fixture, ensure large holes on locating plates face each other. (Scheme 3)
  2. Lock crankshaft at TDC No. 3 cylinder with Crank Locating Pin (V.A.G. 3242) inserted through threaded hole in block where reference sensor usually is, and into locating notch in crankshaft. (Scheme 4) Fit and tension cam drive belt. Remove timing fixture and locating pin.
