General information
The approved wheel/tire combinations are listed in
Vehicle Owner's Manual .
For safety reasons, tires should be replaced not individually but in pairs for one axle at a time or for both axles together.
The tires with the deeper tread should always be installed to the front wheels.
It is recommended to use tires of the same make, design and tread type on all wheels.
When installing a new wheel rim or tire, always make sure to replace the rubber valve stem.
Tires should be installed with the DOT marking facing outward. In the case of tires with a directional tread pattern, this only applies to the left-hand side of the vehicle.
If using tires with a directional tread pattern, the wheel/tire combination for the spare wheel should be the same as for the wheels on the right-hand side of the vehicle.
Overview

Balancing wheels on the vehicle
Check whether vehicle is equipped with traction control system (ASR).
If vehicle has ASR, deactivate system before performing balancing work.
Note. Incorrectly balanced wheels cause steering wheel vibration and shuddering at the front of the vehicle. Position vehicle on the sensor platforms (front axle only for front-wheel drive, both axles for all-wheel drive) in order to carry out wheel balancing. Check manufacturer's instructions for operating wheel balancing equipment.
Instructions for changing and installing wheels
| WARNING | Tightening of wheel bolts and wheels is only guaranteed if the checks/instructions below are followed. |
The following instructions must be performed on the removal of wheel (rim).
Scheme 4
- Check whether the rim contact surfaces on the brake disc/ wheel (rim) as well as brake disc/wheel hub are free of corrosion and dirt. Remove oil, grease, and corrosion as necessary
- Check that the centering holes of the wheel (rim) and the centering flange of the hub are free of corrosion and dirt. If necessary, remove any oil, grease and corrosion and apply Wax Spray D 322 000 A2 to ensure that the parts are protected against corrosion. NOTE: The wax spray must not come into contact with brake system components.
- If rust drops between the brake disc and the wheel hub during disassembly, remove it by blowing out with compressed air. WARNING: Always wear protective glasses.
- Check wheel bolts and wheel hub threads for cleanliness. The wheel bolts must be able to be screwed in the entire thread length when installing the wheel.
- Use a wire brush to clean dirty wheel bolts. Heavily corroded and/or damaged wheel bolts must be replaced.
- Lightly corroded wheel bolts are re-used, the bolts must be cleaned in the area of the contact surface and on the threads while on the sliding surfaces Optimol TA paste, Part No. G 052 109 A2 must be applied as follows: Threaded portion -1- and contact surface -2- to be greased lightly Grease lightly at threaded portion -4- as well as between bolt head contact surface -3- and ring. The contact surface -5- toward the wheel rim must not be greased NOTE: Use Optimol TA paste, Part-No. G 052 109 A2. The paste must not make contact with brake system components.
- Make sure that the bore of the brake disc aligns with the thread of the hub. The thread of the lug bolts must not contact the brake disc hole.
Wheel, installation
- Fasten all wheels as follows
- Screw lug bolts in evenly by hand.
- Tighten lug bolts in diagonal sequence with vehicle still raised off the ground. Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ft lb)
- Lower the vehicle onto the ground and tighten all the lug bolts in diagonal sequence. Tightening torque: 120 Nm (89 ft lb)
