Collision/avoidance 438 illustrations ~18018 words

General information

The instrument cluster contains an electronic speedometer, tachometer, liquid crystal (LCD) displays for odometer, trip odometer, digital clock with date, as well as analog coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Control and warning lamps are situated within the speedometer and tachometer faces. An LCD gear indicator display is included.

A "Driver's Information System" LCD is located between the tachometer and speedometer. Displayed information includes an auto check system, outside air temperature, automatic transmission range, radio frequency and selectable trip computer functions.

The driver information system contains a selection menu. This is operated via a function selection switch in the center console with the functions

  1. Turn knob toward left. Selection arrow moves downward
  2. Turn knob toward right. Selection arrow moves upward
  3. Press knob. Confirm selection
  4. Additional information on the selection menu See Audi A8 Owners Manual

The optional Navigation system display is also included in the Driver's Information System (where applicable).

The instrument cluster is equipped with a adaptable Service Reminder Indicator (SRI), i.e. the instrument cluster evaluates various service requirements of the vehicle based on input quantities like, for example, driveability or oil consumption.

The speedometer contains an LCD display for the odometer and trip recorder.

Brightness of the instrument cluster lighting is automatically regulated based on the brightness of surrounding light. The control range of the automatic brightness control can be adjusted using the plus and minus buttons.

See Audi A8 Owner's Manual.

The instrument cluster is controlled by a microprocessor and has extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities. If malfunctions occur in any of the system components, corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored in the DTC memory of the instrument cluster. These can then be identified using the VAG 1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST).

Note. The description in this repair manual refers only to the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST).

Malfunction message "dEF" on trip recorder display

If the control module in the instrument cluster detects a malfunction in its permanent memory, the letters "dEF" will appear on the trip recorder display.

  1. If "dEF" is indicated on display, replace instrument cluster. See «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instruments__instrument-cluster-removing-and-installing) .

Notes for replacing instrument cluster

  1. Instrument cluster must not be disassembled.
  2. If necessary, instrument cluster should be replaced through the exchange loop.
  3. Fill out a damage report form and return together with malfunctioning instrument cluster.
  4. Malfunctioning units must always be returned in original packaging.
  5. The odometer and the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) on the replacement instrument cluster can be adapted using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST). See «ADAPTATION (FUNCTION 10)»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd__adaptation-function-10) .

Safety precautions

If the use of test equipment is required during test drive, note the following

WARNINGTo reduce the risk of accident when using test equipment, proceed as follows: Use only the VAS 5051 or VAG 1551 to read out measuring value blocks. Tester must always be secured to rear seat and operated from there by a 2nd person.

To reduce the risk of personal injury and/or damage of electric and electronic components, always observe the following

  1. Always switch ignition off before connecting or disconnecting test/measurement tools.
  2. It is possible that the control module will recognize a malfunction and store a DTC during some tests. After completing all tests and repairs, DTC memory should therefore be checked and erased if necessary.
  3. Always switch ignition off before disconnecting or connecting battery. Failure to do so may damage the control module.

Test requirements

  1. Check fuses according to wiring diagram
  2. Always check coding of instrument cluster according to code table. See «CODING TABLE»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd) .
  3. Connect VAS 5051 tester or VAG 1551 scan tool. See «VAS 5051 TESTER OR VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING AND SELECTING FUNCTIONS»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd) .
  4. Switch on ignition

Note. If nothing is indicated on display, check voltage supply for VAG 1551 scan tool according to wiring diagram. Additional instructions can be called up via the HELP button on the scan tool. The --> button is used for advancing through the program sequence. An incorrect entry can be canceled using the -C- button. Function 00 "Automatic test sequence" can be performed in operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer." This automatically checks all control modules installed in the vehicle.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table

Note. The following table lists all malfunctions that can be recognized by the instrument cluster and printed out by the VAG 1551 scan tool. The malfunctions are listed in order according to their 5-digit numbers. DTC numbers appear only on the print-out. Before replacing a component shown as faulty, check the wiring and connections to the component as well as the Ground (GND) connections according to wiring diagram. After repairs and function test of the system, DTC memory must always be checked again using the VAG 1551 scan tool and erased. DTC memory records all static and sporadic malfunctions: If a malfunction occurs and persists for at least 2 seconds, it is identified as a static malfunction (outside temperature malfunction at least 60 seconds, coolant temperature sensor only after at least 30 minutes with engine running). If a malfunction does not occur again, it is registered as sporadic. "ISP" will appear at right on scan tool display. When the ignition is switched on, all existing malfunctions are automatically re-classified as sporadic malfunctions and will only register as static malfunctions if they still occur after testing. Sporadic malfunctions which no longer occur after 50 driving cycles (ignition on at least 5 minutes, vehicle speed above 30 km/h) are erased automatically.

Data exchange between control modules, checking

Note. Data exchange between individual control modules occurs via a bus system. The term "CAN-bus" refers to a system that transports and distributes data. The wire connections between the control modules, via which data is transferred, are referred to as data wires. Data is transferred to the connected control modules serially (one after the other) across the data wires.

Checking bus system

The DTC table indicated that data exchange via the bus should be checked

  1. Check to be sure the multi-pin connectors of the control modules are securely connected.
  2. Connect the VAS 5051 tester or VAG 1551 scan tool. See «VAS 5051 TESTER OR VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING AND SELECTING FUNCTIONS»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd) .
  3. Switch ignition on
  4. Switch printer on via the PRINT button (indicator lamp in button lights up).
  5. Press button 1 to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

Scheme 218

Scheme 218

Note. The address word 00 initiates the automatic test sequence, i.e. it results in a DTC check on all OBD capable systems in the vehicle via rapid data transfer.

When a control module responds with its identification, the display indicates the number of stored DTCs or indicates "no malfunctions recognized."

DTCs stored in the system are indicated sequence and printed out. Then the VAG 1551 scan tool sends the next address word.

Automatic test sequence is over when the following indication appears on the display

Scheme 219

Scheme 219

If a malfunction involving" ... databus" or" ... no communication" is indicated

  1. Check whether the correct control module for this vehicle is installed (part number and coding).

If the correct control modules are installed, check the CAN bus system.

Checking a "two-line bus system"

Three or more control modules are communicating across a "two-line bus system."

  1. Analyze the DTCs stored in the memories of the control modules. This analysis will help you locate the cause of the line malfunction.

Example 1

From the DTCs stored in the memories, you have determined that control module 1 is not communicating with control modules 2 and 3

  1. Switch ignition off.
  2. Disconnect the control modules connected across the bus lines and check the bus lines for an open circuit. See appropriate System Wiring Diagram article.
  1. Check the bus lines for short circuit to B+ or Ground (GND).

If you cannot determine a cause for the malfunction, e.g. "power train data-BUS faulty", check whether one of the control modules may be responsible for the DTC

All control modules that use the CAN-bus are still disconnected. Ignition is switched off.

  1. Connect one of the control modules.
  2. Connect VAG 1551 scan tool. Switch ignition on, and erase the DTC memory of the control module you just connected. End scan tool output using the "End Output" function 06.
  3. Switch ignition off and then on.
  4. Leave ignition on for 10 seconds. Then, read the DTC memory of the control module you just connected.
  5. If the DTC "power train data-BUS faulty" is displayed, replace the control module you just connected.
  6. If the DTC "power train data-BUS faulty" is not displayed, connect the next control module and repeat the procedure.

All A8 from m.y. 2000 are equipped with Immobilizer Generation III.

Generation III has the same functionality as the previous version. However, in addition to the normal data exchange between the immobilizer control module and ignition key, Gen. III includes data exchange between the immobilizer control module and Engine Control Module (ECM).

Data exchange between the Immobilizer control module and ECM takes place over the vehicle CAN-Bus network.

Note. For Immobilizer III, the Engine Control Module (ECM) is actively incorporated into the evaluation and monitoring. The control module for immobilizer is integrated into the instrument cluster. For immobilizer III, the keys are marked with an inscribed "W". The code consists of a fixed code and a variable code portion.

Function

Immobilizer III consists of

  1. an adapted control module for anti-theft immobilizer (integrated in instrument cluster)
  2. a warning light in instrument cluster
  3. an induction coil at ignition lock
  4. an adapted Engine Control Module (ECM)
  5. and adapted ignition keys with electronics (transponder).

The control module for anti-theft immobilizer is integrated in the instrument cluster, e.g. if control module is malfunctioning, instrument cluster must be replaced. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

The anti-theft immobilizer is a system for enabling/locking the Engine Control Module (ECM) via the CAN wire.

The transponder code consists of a fixed code and a variable code. This is different for every start procedure and therefore acts as a copy protection for the transponder.

Every immobilizer contains a different computational rule for the variable code that remains the same for its entire service life. During adaptation of the vehicle key, the immobilizer writes this computational rule into the transponder and simultaneously learns the fixed code of the current key.

The fixed code identifies each individual key so that a key that is lost can be blocked from usage. Each time the ignition is switched on, the induction coil for immobilizer reads the transponder's fixed code and then the variable code and determines whether this key is authorized for vehicle start.

The warning lamp lights up briefly (max. 3 seconds) and then goes out when an authorized vehicle key is used.

When an unauthorized vehicle key is used or when a system malfunction occurs, the warning lamp blinks constantly during ignition "on".

The electronic anti-theft immobilizer is capable of extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD). If malfunctions occur in any of the system components, corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored in the DTC memory of the anti-theft immobilizer. Malfunctions can be determined via the VAG 1551 scan tool or VAS 5051 tester.

Note. The following description refers only to the VAG 1551 tester.

Notes for use and adaptation of vehicle key

Engine will only start when an authorized vehicle key is used, i.e. on of the keys adapted to the immobilizer.

During adaptation of the vehicle keys (see ADAPTATION OF VEHICLE KEYS ), all vehicle keys, including replacement and emergency keys, must always be adapted to the immobilizer.

If new or extra vehicle keys are required, adaptation of all vehicle keys must be performed.

If adaptation cannot be performed for all vehicle keys, for example, key lost during a trip, the customer must be informed that adaptation must eventually be performed for any and all vehicle keys.

Especially when a key has been lost, all vehicle keys should be re-adapted, since this will render the lost key unauthorized for vehicle start.

If special testing equipment is required during road test, note the following

WARNINGTo reduce the risk of accident during road tests, always proceed as follows: Only the VAS 5051 may be used for reading out measuring value blocks. Always secure scan tool to the rear seat and have operated from there by a second technician.

Failure to do so may damage electronic control modules.

If malfunctions occur in the sensors and components being monitored, they will be stored in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory together with an indication of the type of malfunction.

A maximum of 4 DTCs can be stored simultaneously.

Sporadic malfunctions are automatically cancelled if they are not repeated in next 50 engine starts.

Effective calendar date 03.11.2002, On Board Diagnostic of the anti-theft immobilizer system are to be carried out using either the VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System.

Note. Display fields in function 08 - Read Measuring Value Block are read-out vertically. While the display field contents are identical between the VAS 5051/5052 and VAG 1551, the display format is different.

Effective calendar date 03.11.2002, the immobilizer secret number is encoded for increased security. The encoded number is now 7-digits and is referred to as a "PIN" ("Personal Identification Number").

All models with anti-theft immobilizer are affected, regardless of generation.

The process to obtain the 7-digit PIN remains the same as with the 4-digit "secret number previously used - that is: request via the "Warranty Information Network" (WIN). However, WIN Administration now requires additional information from both the vehicle and Dealer in order to generate the 7-digit PIN.

The PIN is only valid on the day it is requested. Thereafter, a new PIN is required.

The 7-digit PIN can only be processed and input using either the VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 with basis CD version 3.10 and higher. VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tools are unable to process or input this number.

A correct Importer/Dealer number must reside in the VAS 5051/5052 in order to request a PIN.

The requested PIN is worthless to other Dealers.

CAUTIONAll Dealership VAS 5051 and VAS 5052 testers in service MUST be programmed with the correct Importer/Dealer number, as well as correct date and time. Adaptation functions of the anti-theft immobilizer are not possible with incorrect data!

Note. The following description and illustrations deal specifically with the VAG1551 scan tool. VAG 1552 procedures are similar, but printing is not possible.

Determining the secret number

If the 4-digit secret number is not known or the new vehicle key fob with the secret number is not available, the secret number must be requested from the WIN system code retrieval system by supplying the 14-character immobilizer control module identification number.

The 14 digit identification number of the Engine Control Module (ECM) or control module for anti-theft immobilizer can be read out via the "Check control module version" function of On Board Diagnostic (OBD).

Note. Effective calendar date 03.11.2002, the immobilizer secret number is encoded for increased security. The encoded number is now 7-digits and is referred to as a "PIN" ("Personal Identification Number"). The associated process is also new. See ANTI-THEFT IMMOBILIZER ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD), INITIATING .

Adaptation after replacing the instrument cluster

Note. The instrument cluster (immobilizer) is adapted to the Engine Control Module. When the instrument cluster is replaced, the new instrument cluster must be re-adapted to the Engine Control Module (ECM). After adapting the instrument cluster to the Engine Control Module, vehicle key adaptation must be performed. See ADAPTATION OF VEHICLE KEYS . Adaptation can be interrupted using the "C" button of the VAG 1551 scan tool.

  1. Insert old (authorized) ignition key into ignition lock and switch on ignition.
  2. If no authorized ignition keys are available, then new ignition keys must be made and be adapted following "Adaptation after replacing instrument cluster."
  3. Connect VAG 1551 scan tool and initiate OBD of engine electronics using address word "01"

Adaptation of the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the immobilizer has been completed and the vehicle can be started.

Adaptation after replacing the instrument cluster and the Engine Control Module (ECM)

CAUTIONIf instrument cluster and engine control module are simultaneously replaced all vehicle keys must also be replaced.

The computational rule for the variable code is written into the transponder and locked during adaptation of the vehicle key. After this, these vehicle keys cannot be adapted to another immobilizer. If the instrument cluster and Engine Control Module (ECM) are both replaced together, the new immobilizer in the instrument cluster receives a different computational rule for the variable code. During adaptation, this new computational rule will be written into the Engine Control Module (ECM) and into the vehicle keys where it is also locked.

Procedure

  1. Input VIN in instrument cluster (only possible with VAS 5051 tester).
  2. Perform adaptation after replacing Engine Control Module (ECM). See «ADAPTATION AFTER REPLACING THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd__adaptation-after-replacing-the-engine-control) .
  3. Perform adaptation of vehicle keys. See «ADAPTATION OF VEHICLE KEYS»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd__adaptation-of-vehicle-keys) .
CAUTIONEntering the VIN in the instrument cluster is only possible with the VAG5051 tester.
  1. Connect the VAS 5051 and enter vehicle On Board Diagnostic (OBD). Select vehicle system "17 - instrument cluster." Select diagnostic function "Transmit Vehicle Identification Number."
  2. Transmit the vehicle's VIN and confirm.

Note. The following adaptations are also possible using the VAS 5051 tester.

  1. Perform "Adaptation after replacing Engine Control Module (ECM)". See «ADAPTATION AFTER REPLACING THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd__adaptation-after-replacing-the-engine-control) .
  2. Perform "Adaptation of vehicle keys". See «ADAPTATION OF VEHICLE KEYS»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/collisionavoidance/#on-board-diagnostic-obd__adaptation-of-vehicle-keys) .

Instrument cluster, Engine Control Module (ECM) and vehicle keys are now adapted and the vehicle can be started.

Login procedure

Note. The secret number must be determined using the 14 digit identification number of the anti-theft immobilizer or Engine Control Module (ECM) by querying the system directly (like direct query of radio code). Furthermore, it is possible to obtain the secret number via the relevant distributor or importer. After the third incorrect input of the secret number, the control module for anti-theft immobilizer or Engine Control Module (ECM) will be locked. It is not possible to make another attempt for 10 minutes. During this time, the ignition must remain constantly switched on. On Board Diagnostic (OBD) must be exited using the "End Output" function 06. This time is doubled after every third consecutive incorrect attempt, up to a maximum of 255 minutes.

Electrical test using VAG 1598/31 test box

  1. VAG1598/31 test box is designed so that it can be simultaneously connected to the wiring harness at the Engine Control Module (ECM) and also to the ECM itself.
  2. This is advantageous because electronic engine control remains fully functional (e.g. measurement of signals with engine running) when the test box is attached.
  3. Relevant test procedures note whether Engine Control Module (ECM) should also be connected to the test box or not.
  4. Use the following for the test: hand held multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) or the VAG1715 voltage tester and the VAG1527 diode test lamp.
  5. Always use adapter cables from VAG1594 connector test kit for connecting special tools to the VAG1598/31 test box.
  6. Perform adaptation of Engine Control Module (ECM) to throttle valve control module after reconnecting the Engine Control Module (ECM). See «THROTTLE VALVE CONTROL MODULE, ADAPTATION»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/fuel-system/#multiport-fuel-injection-mfi-42l-v8-akb-aux-ays__throttle-valve-control-module-adaptation) .
CAUTIONTo reduce the risk of damage to electronic components, switch on component to be tested before connecting test wires and observe test requirements.
  1. Switch ignition off.
  2. Remove cover of protective housing for control modules.
  3. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off retaining bracket (arrow).
  4. Then disengage connector from control module and disconnect.
  5. Connect VAG1598/31 test box to connector of wiring harness. Ground (GND) clip at test box (not visible in illustration) must be clipped to battery minus. Relevant test procedures note whether Engine Control Module (ECM) should also be connected to the test box.
  6. Perform test as described in relevant repair sequence.
  7. Disconnect harness connector at cruise control switch. See «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/steering-column-switches/#lights-switches-exterior) .

Wire connection must be checked for short circuit to B+, Ground (GND) and for open circuit

  1. Check wire connection according to wiring diagram. See appropriate System Wiring Diagram article.
  2. Repair open circuit or short circuit if necessary.

Cruise control switch must be replaced if wire connection is OK.

The Acoustic Parking System monitors the vehicle's environment via four ultrasound sensors in the front bumper and four ultrasound sensors in the rear bumper. The acoustic gap notification is given via one chime in the front and one in the rear of the vehicle interior.

There are four ultrasound sensors built into each of the bumpers, front and rear. The sensors can be controlled in either the combined send/receive mode or in receive mode alone.

The rear sensors are switched off if a trailer hitch is attached and the trailer plug is connected. The front sensors remain active.

The gap warning starts during reverse or forward driving (acoustic parking system active) at

  1. less than approx. 60 cm on all side sensors
  2. less than approx. 120 cm for front-center sensors
  3. less than approx. 150 cm for rear-center sensors

The Acoustic Parking System (APS) consists of

  1. Control module for parking aid -J446
  2. Right front parking aid sensor -G252
  3. Right front center parking aid sensor -G253
  4. Left front center parking aid sensor -G254
  5. Left front parking aid sensor -G255
  6. Left rear parking aid sensor -G203
  7. Left rear center parking aid sensor -G204
  8. Right rear center parking aid sensor -G205
  9. Right rear parking aid sensor -G206
  10. Front parking aid warning buzzer -H22
  11. Warning buzzer for parking -H15
  12. Switch for parking assistance with integrated function lamp (LED)

After switching ignition on, a self-test is performed that is completed in less than a second. The control module is now permanently in operation, but gap recognition is only activated once reverse gear is engaged or can be activated/deactivated with the switch for parking assistance.

When parking assistance is ready, a short signal is sounded (delay of one second for automatic vehicles due to P-D shift) and the function lamp in the switch lights up. If a malfunction is detected in the system, a constant signal sounds for 5 seconds and the function lamp in the switch for parking assistance blinks.

The pauses between chime impulses get shorter as the gap between vehicles gets smaller. For gaps under 25 cm, the chime becomes constant. (Volume and pitch (frequency) can be adapted using the VAG 1551. See Adaptation (function 10) ).

ADAPTATION FUNCTIONS - ACOUSTIC PARKING SYSTEM

Automatic vertical headlight aim control keeps the tilt angle of the low beams constant, even when vehicle tilt is different due to a load shift or acceleration/deceleration.

There is one level sensor at the front axle and one at the rear axle that register the vehicle's spring deflection. A signal proportional to vehicle speed is also processed by the ABS control module.

The control module evaluates these signals and activates the automatic vertical headlight aim control actuators when the lights are switched on.

Automatic vertical headlight aim control is required by law for vehicles with gas-discharge (xenon) headlights.

Automatic vertical headlight aim control consists of

  1. Automatic vertical aim control system control module -J431
  2. Left rear level control system sensor -G76
  3. Left front level control system sensor -G78
  4. Left headlight beam adjusting motor -V48
  5. Right headlight beam adjusting motor -V49

When the vehicle is started, it's current tilt is determined according to a specified value and is sent to the automatic vertical headlight aim control actuator, which leads to a one time correction of the headlight tilt, regardless of whether or not low beams are switched on.

Thereafter, changes relative to the specified value are only sent to the automatic vertical headlight aim control actuator when low beams are switched on.

If malfunctions occur in the system, the driver is notified via a warning symbol in the instrument cluster's center display.
