TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS
| CAUTION | Before working on electrical system, determine correct coding for anti-theft radio. Switch ignition off. Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap. |
1997-99
Before disconnecting the battery, please read the following
- Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio
- Turn ignition OFF.
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- After reconnecting the battery cable, the ECM "Basic Setting" must be re-established using the VAG 1551 scan tool, or equivalent aftermarket scan tool.
- In the initial learning phase after establishing basic setting, engine idle and driveability may be affected. In this case, let the engine run at idle for a few minutes until the learning process is completed.
2000-03
Before disconnecting the battery, please read the following
- Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio
- Turn ignition OFF.
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module. The emergency (back-up) battery is mounted behind the Telephone/Telematic Control Module (under rear parcel shelf). (Scheme 1)
- After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio.
- Check operation of clock and power windows.

- Disconnect battery. Remove generator. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/charging-system/#generators-regulators__removal-installation) in GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove noise insulation panel beneath engine. (Scheme 2)
- Remove engine cover/trim (over intake manifold). (Scheme 3)
- Remove air intake duct between air cleaner and mass airflow sensor. Remove intake air ducts between air cleaner housing and lock carrier.
- Remove bolts from air shroud and coolant fan. Remove coolant fan without disconnecting and lay aside. (Scheme 4) Remove cover from suspension strut connection and air cleaner housing.
- Install 10-222A engine support bridge with 10-222A/4 adapter for engine support to bolts of suspension strut connection. (Scheme 5) The threaded spindle (B) must point toward the front and the threaded spindle (C) must point toward the rear. Do not use 10-222 A/1 bracket for engine.
- Disconnect and plug fuel line from fuel pressure regulator. (Scheme 6)
- Insert 3180 retainer from transmission side into support eye of engine and tighten. (Scheme 5) Insert 10-222A/2 hooks (A) into support eye at fuel pressure regulator. Slightly pre-tension engine with both spindles (B and C).
- Be sure when lifting and lowering engine that hook (B) or auxiliary hook (A) do not come in contact with fuel pressure regulator. (Scheme 7)
- Remove lower bolts at engine mounts. (Scheme 8)
- Remove bolts at right front torque support. Using spindles, lift engine until engine mount protrudes from engine/transmission carrier. (Scheme 9) Be careful not to damage the damping mat on the side panel with the throttle valve unit.
- Remove right engine mount and wiring clamps. Position engine mount on engine/transmission carrier. (Scheme 10)
- Disconnect wiring connections from starter. From engine and transaxle side, remove lower starter mounting bolt (1). (Scheme 11) Remove socket bolt (2). Remove starter.
- Install starter in reverse order of removal. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/starter/#starters__torque-specifications).
