INSIDE DAY/NIGHT MIRROR

Adjust the inside mirror manually. When the ignition is switched on, the inside rear view mirror will "dim itself" electronically, depending on the intensity of outside light (for example, the light shining from the vehicle headlights behind you). When you move the selector lever into Reverse (R) or when you switch the interior lights on, the inside mirror will return to its original position (dimming effect off).

Automatic Day/Night Outside Mirrors

The outside mirrors are automatically dimmed together with the automatic inside day/night mirror. When the ignition is on, the mirrors dim automatically depending on the outside light, for example; light shining from the vehicle headlights behind you. When the interior lights are switched on, or when you shift into Reverse gear, the mirrors switch back to their original brightness (not dimmed).

Note. In order for the automatic mirror dimmer to work properly without any interference make sure the rear window shade is rolled up and/or the light shining on the inside mirror is not blocked by other objects.

With the ignition on, both outside mirrors can be adjusted using the rocker switch (C). (Scheme 1) Press the control in the appropriate direction to move the mirror surface. The adjuster control can be switched over to operate either the left or right-hand door mirrors by turning the knob.

The outside mirrors are automatically heated when the ignition is switched on.If the electrical adjustment of the mirror should not respond, it can be adjusted by hand by pushing on the edge of the mirror glass.

Folding Down Of The Outside Mirror (Passenger's Side)

When you move the selector lever into Reverse (R), the outside mirror on the passenger's side will tilt slightly downwards, provided you have switched to the right-hand outside mirror. This makes is possible to see the edge of the curb when parking your vehicle. The mirror will return to its original position as soon as you move the gearshift or selector lever out of Reverse (R) , or if you switch the remote control back to the driver's outside mirror.

Memory

The setting of the outside mirrors is automatically stored in the memory for the driver's seat adjustment together with the seat position. Adjust the mirrors as described then store this setting together with your seating position memory.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Verify customer complaint by operating suspected system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary.

AUTOMATIC DIMMING INSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR SYSTEM CHECK

  1. Hold photo sensor closed on front side (or tape).
  2. Illuminate photo sensor on back side using light source (flash light).
  3. The inside rear view mirror must dim within a short time.

Measurements At Switch For Mirror Adjustment (E168)

  1. Remove mirror adjustment switch and disconnect harness connector.
  2. Connect adapter harness (VAG 1598/13) to Test Box (VAG 1598), mirror adjustment switch harness connector and mirror adjustment switch.
  3. Check for continuity. (Scheme 6) If adapter harness (VAG 1598/13) to Test Box (VAG 1598) are not available, pin-outs can be checked directly at switch. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors).
  4. See «CORRECTIVE MEASURES»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/mirrors/#power-mirrors).
