Cruise Control Systems 2 illustrations ~480 words
CAUTIONBefore working on the electrical system: Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio. Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.

Note. After reconnecting the battery be sure to reactivate the radio, clock, power windows and engine according to instructions in the Owner's Manual.

The cruise control, control module is located in the electronics box (E-box) in the plenum.

Note. The following list refers to items in (Scheme 1).

  1. Actuator with membrane
  2. Brake vent valve
  3. Clutch vent valve
  4. Vacuum hose T-connector
  5. Vacuum pump

Note. The operating switch is integrated in the turn signal lever. Contact assignment on ignition switch. See TERMINAL ASSIGNMENT FOR WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH, HIGH INTENSITY WASHER SYSTEM, HEADLIGHT WASHER SYSTEM AND ON-BOARD COMPUTER . The cruise control, control module is located in the electronics box (E-box) in the plenum.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: Removing
  1. Remove screws for plenum and remove cover.
  2. Remove cover for E-box (remove 4 screws).
  3. Remove nut -1- and remove control module upward from E-box.
  4. Disconnect electrical connector. (Scheme 2): Removing Nut And Control Module Upward From E-Box

Installing

  1. Install control module in reverse order of removal.

Scheme 2

Scheme 2: Cruise control actuator linkage, adjusting
  1. Start engine and run at idle (closed throttle)
  2. Turn actuator linkage -2- to stop and then back-off one turn (360° => 90°) The free play -a- between linkage -2- and stop at the washer -1- must be between 0.5 to 1.0 mm.
  3. Secure actuator linkage with counter nut. see scheme 3: Measuring Free Play Between Linkage And Stop At Washer

Actuators, removing and installing

The installation position of the individual actuators may vary depending on the type of engine installed.

Removing

  1. Remove vacuum line.
  2. Disconnect linkage.
  3. Remove actuator from bracket -arrow-. Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
  1. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

The cruise control vacuum pump is located under the ABS hydraulic control unit. The pump can be removed after removing the left wheel housing liner.

  1. Remove left front road wheel.
  2. Remove wheel housing liner. See «WHEELHOUSING LINER»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/mirrors/#exterior-equipment) .
  3. Remove nuts -3- and remove unit toward the left and over the wheel housing.
  4. Pull out vacuum pump -1- from bracket -2- complete with rubber supports.

Disconnect vacuum hose to actuator.

  1. Install cruise control vacuum pump in reverse order of removal.

Refer to turn signal switch, removing and installing. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Vent valves, removing and installing

Note. Removal and installation procedure for clutch vent valve and brake vent valve is the same.

  1. Remove driver's side instrument panel trim.
  2. Remove electrical connector and vacuum hose.
  3. Unscrew vent valve from bracket.

Pedal must not be depressed.

  1. Screw in vent valve to stop.
  2. Connect electrical connector and vacuum hose.
  1. Remove vacuum hose from vacuum pump and plug hose.
  2. Remove driver's side instrument panel trim.
  3. Push in actuator diaphragm and at the same time push brake pedal down to point of resistance.
  4. Release brake pedal.
  5. The actuator diaphragm must not move.

Note. Incorrectly installed vent valves, leaking actuators or cracks in vacuum hoses can lead to malfunctions.
