MANUFACTURER'S SUGGESTED SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
Manufacturer recommends belt and belt tensioner be replaced at 75,000 miles.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. |
Removal
| CAUTION | Before removal, mark an arrow indicating direction of rotation on accessory drive belt and/or timing belt. Damage may result if belts are installed in opposite direction of rotation. |
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Working under vehicle, remove noise insulator. (Scheme 1)
- Remove front wheels. Loosen front half of wheelhousing, and unscrew flanged nuts on both sides. Remove screw/washer assembly from wheelhouse liner. Remove socket-head bolts and remove bumper cover (together with impact absorber) toward front. (Scheme 2)
- To move lock carrier into service position, perform following steps: Remove intake air duct between lock carrier and air cleaner housing at lock carrier. Remove bolts from lock carrier. On right side, remove bolt and install Support Tool (3369) into right bore. (Scheme 3) On left side, install Support Tool (3369) into threaded hole. Remove bolts on left and right. (Scheme 3)and (Scheme 4). Remove bolts and pull lock carrier forward until rear hole in lock carrier aligns with front threaded hole in fender flange. Secure lock carrier using bolts. (Scheme 5)
- Remove viscous fan using spanner wrench and Pin Wrench (3212) to hold fan. (Scheme 6)
- Using a 17-mm wrench turn belt tensioner to the right until two holes are aligned. Hold tensioner in position with Mandrel (3204). Remove accessory drive belt. (Scheme 7)
- Unscrew bolts and remove center engine cover panel. Remove pressure hoses between charge air coolers and pressure pipes on left and right sides. (Scheme 8) Remove turbocharger pressure pipes.
- Remove accessory drive belt tensioner (1). Remove left and right timing belt guards (2) and center guard (3). (Scheme 9)
- Rotate crankshaft by hand to TDC. Ensure notch "A" is aligned with notch "B". (Scheme 10) Check position of camshafts. Ensure that the larger holes in the securing plates on the camshaft sprockets must face one another on the inside. If this is not the case, rotate crankshaft one revolution more.
- Remove sealing plug from left side of cylinder block. (Scheme 11) The TDC mark in crankshaft must be visible (or be able to be felt) in line with sealing plug hole. Screw Crankshaft Holding Tool (Audi 3242) into sealing plug and tighten.
- Remove 8 socket-head bolts and remove vibration damper. (Scheme 12)
- Remove idler wheel for accessory drive belt. Remove timing belt guard behind vibration damper. (Scheme 13)
- Using a hex key, turn timing belt tensioner clockwise 8 mm in direction of arrow. (Scheme 14) The toothed belt tensioning element is oil-damped and can be compressed slowly by applying constant pressure. Turn until tensioning lever compresses the oil-damped tensioner element enough to enable Pin (T40011) to be fitted through the holes in the tensioner body and the plunger. This will secure plunger in position. Remove timing belt.

Installation
- Insert Camshaft Locator Bar (3391) into securing plates of the two camshafts. (Scheme 15) Loosen both camshaft bolts and unscrew approximately 5 turns.
- Remove Camshaft Locator Bar (3391). Loosen, but do not remove, both camshaft sprockets with Gear Puller (T40001). (Scheme 16)
- Reinstall both camshaft sprockets with securing plates and tighten hand tight.
- Position timing belt over camshaft sprockets. (Scheme 17) Install Camshaft Locator Bar (3391) on camshafts. Using hex key, turn timing belt tensioner clockwise 8 mm until pin can be removed from tensioner. (Scheme 14)
- Pre-tension timing belt by turning tensioner pulley center bolt clockwise with a torque of 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m). Tighten bolts on camshaft sprockets to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a6/c5-2001-2004/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-27l__torque-specifications).
- Remove camshaft locator bar. Remove crankshaft holding tool. Install plug in engine block. Install timing belt guards.
- Remaining installation is reverse of removal procedure. For accessory drive belt routing (Scheme 18) Ensure lock carrier-to-fender Torx bolts are installed correctly. (Scheme 5)
