1. There are different torque converters. Use the code letters to identify the torque converter -arrow-.

TORQUE CONVERTER, DRAINING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

1. Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782

Procedure

If the ATF becomes dirty due to shavings or during a major transmission overhaul, then the torque converter must be drained.

Extract the ATF from the torque converter using the V.A.G 1782.

TORQUE CONVERTER, CHECKING

Check the torque converter hub -arrow- for wear grooves.

Note. The torque converter must be replaced if it is damaged or faulty.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

1. Extractor T40176
2. Grease for clutch disc shaft splines G 000 100

REMOVING

Remove the left flange shaft. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT .

Secure the T40176 to the torque converter -A- with the nut -B-.

Rotate the T40176 upward.

Note. To prevent the torque converter from tilting, counterhold it underneath as illustrated. Ignore -arrow-.

Remove the torque from the input shaft -arrows- without tilting the converter.

Set the torque converter down carefully, for example on the workbench.

INSTALLING

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following

Always clean the torque converter bell housing in the area where the differential is accessed -arrow A- and the shaft seal -arrow B-.

Note. Replace the shaft seal between the differential and transmission housing -arrow B- if it is damaged. Refer to FRONT FINAL DRIVE OVERVIEW .

Fill the space between the sealing- and dust lip half way with sealing grease G 052 128 A1.

Clean the splines on the input shaft -2- and the torque converter, remove any corrosion and apply a very thin layer of clutch disc spline grease G 000 100 to the splines. Remove any excess grease.

Scheme 30

Slide the torque converter carefully onto the input shaft -arrow- using the T40176. Be careful not to tilt the converter when sliding it on.

Remove the T40176 from the torque converter -A-.

Remove the nut -B-.

Install the left flange shaft. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT .

TORQUE CONVERTER SHAFT SEAL

1. Extractor Lever VW 681 or Pulling Hook T20143
2. Thrust Piece T10137

Procedure

Torque Converter, Removing. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER

Pry out the shaft seal using the VW 681.

Note. The illustration shows a different transmission.

Apply ATF to circumference and sealing lips of shaft seal.

1. Installed position: Open side of shaft seal faces transmission.

Install the shaft seal for the torque converter all the way onto the T10137.
