ENGINE OIL

Viscosity classes, oil specifications and oil capacities

OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP OVERVIEW

Note. If large quantities of metal particles or other deposits such as those caused by partial seizure of the crankshaft or connecting rod damage are found in the engine oil, clean the oil channels thoroughly and replace the engine oil cooler to prevent further damage.

Lower Oil Pan, Tightening Sequence

Tighten the bolts -1 through 19- in 2 stages as follows

Tighten the bolts to 8 Nm.

Tighten the bolts an additional 45°.

Upper Oil Pan, Tightening Sequence

Tighten the bolts -1 through 13- in 2 stages as follows

1. Tighten the bolts to 15 Nm.

2. Tighten the bolts an additional 90°.

OIL PRESSURE SWITCH, CHECKING

Check the oil pressure switch, see vehicle diagnostic tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.

OIL PRESSURE, CHECKING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Oil Pressure Gauge V.A.G 1342

Test Prerequisites

  1. Oil level OK
  2. Engine oil temperature at least 80 °C (176 °F) (radiator fan must start up once).

Test Sequence

Note. Place a cloth under the accessory assembly bracket to collect leaking engine oil.

Disconnect the electrical connector -4- on the reduced oil pressure switch -F378-.

Remove the reduced oil pressure switch -3-.

Screw the V.A.G 1342 into the oil filter bracket in place of the oil pressure switch.

Install the reduced oil pressure switch -- in the V.A.G 1342.

Start the engine.

  1. Oil pressure at idle: 1.2 to 2.1 bar.
  2. Oil pressure at 2000 RPM: 1.6 to 2.1 bar positive pressure.
  3. Oil pressure at 3700 RPM: 3.0 to 4.0 bar positive pressure.

Note. During the break-in phase, the oil pressure may be at 2000/min at 3.0 to 4.0 bar.

Assembling

  1. For the correct tightening specifications, refer to «OIL FILTER, OIL COOLER AND OIL PRESSURE SWITCH OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant) .

Install the oil pressure switch.

OIL LEVEL, CHECKING

Check the oil level.

OIL SEPARATOR

  1. Engine Support Bridge 10 - 222 A

Removing

Support the engine. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORT WITH ENGINE SUPPORT BRIDGE .

Loosen the hose clamps -arrows- and remove the air guide hose.

Remove the left front wheel.

Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

Remove the left wheel housing liner. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the left engine mount bolt -1-.

Remove the oil separator -1 through 9-.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

LOWER OIL PAN

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
  2. Hand drill with plastic brush attachment
  3. Protective goggles
  4. Silicone sealant

Removing

Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

Remove the crossbrace -4-. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the stabilizer bar -1-. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the bolts -2- and nuts -3-.

Move the steering gear -5- slightly to the right, lower it approximately 10 cm and then tie it up.

CAUTIONRisk of damaging the oil lines and hoses. Do not stretch, kink or bend oil lines and hoses.
CAUTIONSuspension components could be damaged. Never rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, steering gear or subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly. Do not support the vehicle on the subframe or the subframe crossbrace, for example, by a floor jack or similar device.

Remove bolt -arrow-.

Remove the steering column -1- from the steering gear -2-.

Place the V.A.G 1782 under the engine and drain the engine oil.

Note. Observe disposal regulations!

Disconnect the connector from the oil level thermal sensor -G266- -arrow-.

Remove the oil level thermal sensor.

Remove the bolts -1 through 19-.

Remove oil pan, if necessary loosen by applying light strikes with a rubber hammer.

Installing

  1. For the correct tightening specifications, refer to «OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant__oil-pan-and-oil-pump-overview)
  1. Silicone sealant

Note. Note the expiration date of the silicone sealant. The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of silicone sealant. Replace the bolts which are being tightened with an additional turn. Replace sealing rings, seals and self-locking nuts.

Spray the sealing surface with sealant remover and allow it to work.

Remove any sealant residue on the upper oil pan using a flat blade scraper.

WARNINGRisk of eye injury. Wear protective goggles.

Remove any remaining sealant on lower oil pan using for example a rotating plastic brush.

Clean sealing surfaces, must be free of oil and grease.

Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter: approximately 3 mm).

Apply silicon sealant to clean sealing surfaces of the lower oil pan as shown in illustration.

  1. Thickness of sealant bead: 2 to 3 mm

Note. The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of silicon sealant. The sealant bead may not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant could enter the oil pan and clog the oil intake tube.

Position the lower section of the oil pan immediately and tighten the bolts, tightening sequence. (Scheme 31)

Note. After installing oil pan, allow sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be replenished.

Fill the engine oil and check the level.

Install the steering gear. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install stabilizer bar. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the crossbrace. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

Assemble in reverse order of disassembly.

OIL PUMP

  2. Locking Tool T40265

Removing

Remove the lower oil pan. Refer to LOWER OIL PAN .

Remove the oil baffle -arrows-.

Pull the chain tensioner spring with the T10118 in the direction of the -arrow- and secure it with the T40265.

Remove the bolts -arrows- and the oil pump.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

  1. Tightening specifications, refer to «OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant__oil-pan-and-oil-pump-overview) .

Make sure both alignment bushings for centering the oil pump are in there.

Install the chain sprocket for the oil pump and then install the oil pump.

CAUTIONDanger of causing damage to the engine. The following procedure must be observed otherwise the chain tensioner spring does not spring into the installed position

Pull the chain tensioner spring with the T10118 in the direction of the -arrow- and remove the T40265.

Insert the new oil baffle and attach it.

Note. There are plastic ribs on the oil baffle that deform permanently when tightening. The plastic ribs ensure the oil baffle is not loosen and does not rattle. Because of this, always replace the oil baffle.

Install lower oil pan. Refer to LOWER OIL PAN .

Fill the engine oil and check the level.

UPPER OIL PAN

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Assembly Tool T10118
  2. Locking Tool T40265
  3. Hand drill with plastic brush attachment
  4. Protective goggles
  5. Silicone sealant

Removing

Remove the transmission. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION for Transmission 0B6 or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Transmission 0BK .

Remove the lower oil pan. Refer to LOWER OIL PAN .

Remove the rear sealing flange. Refer to SEALING FLANGE, TRANSMISSION SIDE .

Remove the oil pump. Refer to OIL PUMP .

Disconnect the connector -1-.

Remove the bolts -1 through 13- and the upper oil pan.

CAUTIONFirst pry the upper oil pan out on the transmission side. When prying out, be careful not to bend the timing chain cover.

Installing

  1. Tightening specifications, refer to «OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant__oil-pan-and-oil-pump-overview) .
  1. Silicone sealant

Remove sealant residue from cylinder block with a flat scraper.

Remove any remaining sealant on the upper oil pan using for example a rotating plastic brush.

Note. See if the timing chain cover is deformed. Then mount the top section of the oil pan without any sealant and check the gap between the cover and the top section. If deformation is found and the cover cannot be aligned, replace the cover after installing the upper oil pan.

Clean sealing surfaces, must be free of oil and grease.

Make sure the oil passages in the upper oil pan and in the cylinder crankcase are clean.

Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter: approximately 2 mm).

Apply silicone sealant to clean sealing surface upper oil pan as shown in the illustration -arrows-.

CAUTIONThe lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant. Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.
  1. Thickness of sealant bead: 2 to 3 mm

Note. The upper oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of silicone sealant. The sealant bead may not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant could enter the oil pan and clog the oil intake tube.

  1. On the transmission side, the upper section of the oil pan and the crankcase must align.

Position the upper section of the oil pan immediately and tighten the bolts, tightening sequence (Scheme 32)

Install the bolts -arrows-. Tightening specifications, refer to item TIMING CHAIN GUARDS, Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N205- OVERVIEW .

Install the rear sealing flange. Refer to SEALING FLANGE, TRANSMISSION SIDE .

Install the oil pump. Refer to OIL PUMP .

Insert the new oil baffle and attach it.

Remove the lower oil pan section. Refer to LOWER OIL PAN .

Assemble in reverse order of disassembly.

Fill the engine oil and check the level.

OIL PRESSURE REGULATION VALVE -N428

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782

Removing

Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

Place the V.A.G 1782 under the engine.

Disconnect the connector -1-.

Remove the bolt -2- and the oil pressure regulation valve -3-.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

  1. Tightening specifications, refer to «OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant__oil-pan-and-oil-pump-overview) .

Note. Replace O-ring.

ENGINE OIL COOLER

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Drip Tray for VAS 6100 VAS 6208

Removing

WARNINGRisk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant. The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm. Reduce pressure by covering coolant reservoir cap with a cloth and carefully opening.

Drain the coolant. Refer to COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING .

Remove the accessory assembly bracket. Refer to ACCESSORY ASSEMBLY BRACKET .

Remove the bolts -4 and 5- and remove the engine oil cooler -3- together with the seal -2-.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

  1. For the correct tightening specifications, refer to «OIL FILTER, OIL COOLER AND OIL PRESSURE SWITCH OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant) .

Note. Always replace gaskets and seals. Secure all hose connections with hose clamps appropriate for the model.

Install the engine oil cooler -3- with a new seal -2-.

Install the accessory assembly bracket. Refer to ACCESSORY ASSEMBLY BRACKET .

Fill the engine oil and check the level.

OIL PRESSURE SWITCH -F22

Removing

Note. Place a cloth under the accessory assembly bracket to collect leaking engine oil.

Disconnect electrical connector -1- on oil pressure switch.

Remove the oil pressure switch -2-.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

  1. Tightening specifications, refer to «OIL FILTER, OIL COOLER AND OIL PRESSURE SWITCH OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant) .

Note. Replace the seal. To prevent coolant loss, insert the new oil pressure switch -- in the connecting pieces immediately.

Check the oil level.

REDUCED OIL PRESSURE SWITCH -F378

Removing

Note. Place a cloth under the accessory assembly bracket to collect leaking engine oil.

Disconnect the electrical connector -4- on the reduced oil pressure switch --.

Remove the reduced oil pressure switch -3-.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

  1. Tightening specifications, refer to «OIL FILTER, OIL COOLER AND OIL PRESSURE SWITCH OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/lubrication-system/#20l-lubrication-engine-codes-caeb-avant) .

Note. Replace the seal. To prevent coolant loss, insert the new reduced oil pressure switch -- in the connecting pieces immediately.

Check the oil level.
