General Functions
The access/start authorization function is located in the comfort system central control module -J393- and is diagnosed under diagnosis address "05 - access/start authorization". Partial scopes are diagnosed under "46 - central module Comfort System".
Main Functions
- Immobilizer V
- Communication with the access/start authorization switch -E415- via the LIN-bus, including the terminal control and ignition key lock
- Interface for remote control and central locking
- Communication with the electronic steering column lock control module -J764- via the LIN-bus
- M-vehicle equipment: Advanced key, reading into the access/start authorization button -E408-, the capacity sensors inside the doors and receiving the signals from the keyless antennas
Service Information
If there is a fault in "05 - access/start authorization" so that the comfort system central control module must be replaced, perform function "46 - replace control module, (Repair Group. 57)" from Guided Fault Finding or Guided Function. If the faulty control module is still installed and is still accessible via diagnosis, the data will be read and stored in the function test before replacing.
The following will be performed in the function test
- "* * - service immobilizer"
- "Software Version Management"
- "Component Protection"
- Restore the stored data
The tester must have an online connection and the user must be authorized for the Geko/SVM system.
The Audi A5 Coupe is the first to get immobilizer V. It will also be installed in the Audi A4 and Q5 models. The function test for adapting immobilizer V is called "* * - service immobilizer" in Guided Fault Finding. The function test is made up of modules and analyzes the data from the Geko data bank. Since the modules are interchangeable there are no actual components, but rather virtual control modules in the communications. This is why the designations may differ somewhat from the component designation, such as in the wiring diagram. All components and designations from the functionality test are listed in the COMPONENT DESIGNATIONS .

| Key -KD5708 | Wrench | The vehicle keys are active in the immobilizer and must be adapted if they are replaced. Up to 8 keys can be adapted. |
Immobilizer V has a "One Button Solution". All components of the immobilizer are adapted using the same function test in Guided Fault Finding. An online connection for the VAS 505X tester family is needed.
"* * - service immobilizer" is selected either in Guided Fault Finding or Guided Functions and incorporated into the test plan. The identical program for each control module can be selected under "* * - functions - immobilizer 5".
Control Module Condition Functional Tests
Each control module can be either in condition 1 (new) or condition 2 (already adapted or taken from another vehicle). Condition 3 is only in the comfort system central control module -J393- under diagnosis address "05 - access/start authorization" and means that key recognition is currently active.
When adapted, all control modules are in condition 2 and have the same VIN.
The following function tests can be included in the test plan in Guided Functions via "* * - functions - immobilizer 5" and in Guided Fault Finding in "* * - immobilizer status of all control modules"
| Function Test | Explanation |
|---|---|
| "05 - immobilizer control module - immobilizer overall status (Repair Group)" | Communicates the status of the comfort system central control module -J393- under diagnosis address "05 - access/start authorization" and of the vehicle key |
| "05 - electronic steering column lock - immobilizer overall status (Repair Group 48)" | Communicates the status of the electronic steering column lock control module -J764 |
| "01 - engine control module - immobilizer overall status (Repair Group 23 and 24)" | Communicates the status of the engine control module -J623 |
| "11 - engine control module 2 - immobilizer overall status (Repair Group 23 and 24)" | Communicates the status of the engine control module 2 -J624 |
| "02 - transmission control module - immobilizer overall status (Repair Group 35 and 38)" | Communicates the status of the transmission control module -J217 |
Service Information
Only the comfort system central control module, the electronic steering column lock control module and one vehicle key are needed to perform "* * - service immobilizer". Only the present systems are adapted. Missing or faulty control modules can be adapted at a later time by repeating the function test.
Adapting the Key
The vehicle keys can be adapted in "* * - service immobilizer". Only the keys from one set can be adapted. A new set of keys gives the vehicle a "new identity". When the first key is inserted, the system recognized if a "new identity" has been adapted. The user does not need to make a choice on the tester.
The specified and actual number of keys being adapted will appear in the instrument cluster control module -J285- as well as on the on diagnosis tester VAS 505X while adapting the keys. The functionality test will automatically continue when the specified number is reached. If all the keys cannot be adapted, then the program can be continued using the arrow pointing to the right. The adaptation can nevertheless be performed without faults.
Up to 8 keys can be adapted. If 0 keys are being adapted, then the vehicle cannot be started any longer.
It is possible to start the engine only after the functionality test "* * - servicing immobilizer " is completed.
Control Module Removal and Installation
After the control module is replaced, perform every functionality test having the title "...replace...". Then all necessary control module functions can be performed and the "* * - servicing immobilizer" can be directly performed or in incorporated into the test plan.
Note. If the comfort system central control module was replaced and the vehicle has a manual transmission, then the key lock is active due to the default coding. Coding can only be performed using "Software Version Management (SVM)". Terminal 15 must be switched on. "46 - replace control module, (Repair Group 57)" must be performed when the immobilizer is adapted because terminal 15 is activated by the comfort system central control module: "* * - servicing immobilizer" is performed automatically in the functionality test. Only one key can be adapted for the time being. Nevertheless, the program must be continued. The "component protection" is automatically adapted, the "Software Version Management" including the coding is rewritten to match the read adaptation values. All the other keys can now be adapted by performing "* * - servicing immobilizer".
General Information
The access/start authorization system authorizes terminal 15 and the engine to start. There can be differences between "starting the engine using a key" and "starting the engine with the advanced key".
Requirement for Terminal 15 ON
In addition to correct wiring, the following requirements must be met in order to switch on terminal 15
- The comfort system central control module -J393- must be adapted to the immobilizer under diagnosis address "05 - access/start authorization".
- The electronic steering column lock control module -J764- must be adapted to the immobilizer.
- The current key must be adapted to the immobilizer.
- The electronic steering column lock control module -J764- must be unlocked.
Requirement for Starting Engine
In addition to the requirements for Terminal 15 ON, the following requirements must be met in order to start the engine
- The comfort system central control module -J393- must be coded under diagnosis address "05 - access/start authorization".
- The engine control module -J623- must be adapted to the immobilizer.
- The engine control module 2 -J624- must be adapted to the immobilizer when it is installed.
- DTC P1570 engine control module locked may not be entered in an engine control module DTC memory.
Starting with Key
Immobilizer V has a completely new operating logic for controlling the terminal and for starting the engine. The electronic ignition lock differentiates between only two different key positions when the key is inserted (S contact)
- Key in rest position, S-contact ON
- Key pushed
The following operating concept results
| Condition Prior to the Action | Action | Condition After the Action |
|---|---|---|
| S contact OFF (ignition off, engine off) | Insert the key | S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) |
| S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) | Remove the key (automatic transmission selector lever in P) | S contact OFF (ignition off, engine off) |
| S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) | Push the key (manual transmission clutch pedal not depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal not depressed) | Ignition ON (engine OFF) |
| S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) | Push the key (manual transmission clutch pedal depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal depressed and selector lever in N or P) | Engine ON |
| Ignition ON (engine OFF) | Push the key (manual transmission clutch pedal not depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal not depressed) | S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) |
| Ignition ON (engine OFF) | Push the key (manual transmission clutch pedal depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal depressed and selector lever in N or P) | Engine ON |
| Engine ON | Push the key (manual transmission vehicle is standing; automatic transmission selector lever in N or P) | S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) |
It switches over to the emergency shut off of the engine. This applies to both manual transmission and automatic transmission vehicles. The following will trigger an emergency shut off
Holding the key pushed in for too long
Pushing the key two within a second
Starting with Advanced Key
The new operating logic for the terminal control and for starting the engine on vehicles with "advanced key" is the same as it was previously explained for starting a vehicle by the key. The electronic ignition lock differentiates between two different conditions conditions
- Access/start authorization button -E408- in rest position
- Access/start authorization button -E408- pressed
The following operating concept results
| Condition Prior to the Action | Action | Condition After the Action |
|---|---|---|
| S contact OFF (ignition off, engine off) | Access/start authorization button pressed (on a manual transmission: clutch pedal not depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal not depressed) | Ignition ON (engine OFF) |
| S contact OFF (ignition off, engine off) | Access/start authorization button pressed (manual transmission clutch pedal depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal depressed and selector lever in N or P) | Engine ON |
| Ignition ON (engine OFF) | Access/start authorization button pressed (manual transmission clutch pedal depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal depressed and selector lever in N or P) | Engine ON |
| Ignition ON (engine OFF) | Access/start authorization button pressed (manual transmission clutch pedal not depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal not depressed) | S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) |
| Ignition ON (engine OFF) | Access/start authorization button pressed (manual transmission clutch pedal not depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal not depressed) and driver door open | S contact OFF (ignition off, engine off) |
| Engine ON | Access/start authorization button pressed (manual transmission vehicle standing; automatic transmission selector lever in N or P) and driver door closed. | S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) |
| Engine ON | Access/start authorization button pressed (manual transmission vehicle standing; automatic transmission selector lever in N or P) and driver door open. | S contact OFF (ignition off, engine off) |
| S contact ON (ignition off, engine off) | Access/start authorization button pressed (manual transmission clutch pedal not depressed; with automatic transmission, brake pedal not depressed)or-- Open the driver door.or-- Lock the vehicle from the outside. | S contact OFF (ignition off, engine off) |
Also with the advanced key an emergency engine shut off occurs, which is the same with both manual and automatic transmissions. Two requirements must be met via the access/start authorization button -E408- for an emergency shut off
The brake pedal is depressed.
Speed <10 kmh
The following will trigger an emergency shut off
The button not held pressed for a long time.
or
The button is pressed twice within one second.
Ignition Key Lock
Electronic ignition lock will mechanically lock when the key is inserted so that the driver cannot pull it out. The key is unlocked again as soon as the ignition is turned off. The unlock takes place when there is current from the solenoid, which released the key. The solenoid is inside the electronic ignition. It receives current directly from the comfort system central control module.
Depending on the type of transmission installed in the vehicle, there is another condition which releases the key
With an automatic transmission, the selector lever must be in P.
With a manual transmission, the vehicle must be standing.
If, due to a technical fault, there is no current flowing to the solenoid in the ignition key lock while the key is in the ignition lock, the key will remain locked. In order to unlock the vehicle, a mechanical emergency key with a key bit can be used. The emergency key is locked in the ignition lock and can be used to mechanically unlock the central locking via the mechanical lock inside the driver door. The mechanical emergency key can be used to open the vehicle via the mechanical lock inside the driver door, if it is not possible to unlock the vehicle using the remote control. It is also needed to deactivate the front passenger airbag.
Service Information
It is important that the comfort system central control module is coded correctly under diagnosis address "05 - access/start authorization" because there is a difference between a vehicle with an automatic transmission and one with a manual transmission. Check the coding in "Guided Fault Finding " or "Guided Functions" using the functionality test "05 - coding control module, (Repair Group 96)". Coding can only be performed using "Software Version Management (SVM)".
General Information
The electronic steering column lock control module -J764- locks the steering column. It is not attached permanently to the steering column and can be replaced separately if faulty.
It is not necessary to replace the steering column if the electronic steering column lock control module is faulty, except in the Audi A6, Audi Q7 and the Audi A8.
The comfort system central control module -J393- assumes the diagnosis for the electronic steering column lock control module under the address "05 - access/start authorization". The LIN-bus transmits the data to the access/start authorization switch -E415-.
System Overview
Both electronic steering column lock release wires on the comfort system central control module and vehicle electrical system control module -J519- must detect the supply voltage in order to lock the steering column for the electronic steering column lock control module. Both control modules for the unlock duration must switch terminal 30 to the wires.
If a "terminal 15 request" is present for the comfort system central control module, then it must be determined if the steering column has actually unlocked before switching terminal 15.
This takes place as follows
- The comfort system central control module inquires after it receives a terminal 15 request from the electronic steering column lock control module via the LIN-bus.
- If the steering column was unlocked successfully, then this will be communicated to the comfort system central control module via the discreet wire "release terminal 15". The release wire remains controlled while the electronic steering column lock control module is unlocked.
- The comfort system central control module controls the terminal 15 relay after the release has occurred.
Steering Column Locking and Unlocking
The control module unlocks the steering column when
The key is inserted into the access/start authorization switch.
Terminal S is activated by pressing the access/start authorization switch on the keyless entry system
The control module locks the steering column when
The key is removed.
The door is opened via the keyless entry system
The following conditions must be met before the steering column can lock
The ignition must be turned off.
Terminal S must not be recognized.
The vehicle must be standing.
Service Information
The discrete wires are diagnosed by the comfort system central control module and the vehicle electrical system control module and can be checked in Guided Fault Finding.

- "J764 - electronic steering column lock, release terminal 15 (Repair Group 48)" for the discrete wire "release terminal 15" from the electronic steering column lock control module to the comfort system central control module.
Selection "09 - electronic central electric | J519 " "09 - partial system conditions"
- "J519 - vehicle electrical system control module, release steering column lock" for the discrete wire "steering column adjustment - release" from the vehicle electrical system control module to the electronic steering column lock control module.
Note. "16 - calibrating the steering angle sensor - G85, (Repair Group 94)" must be performed after replacing the steering column. The electronic steering column lock control module can remain in the vehicle and does not need to be adapted again. "* * - servicing immobilizer" must be performed only if the electronic steering column lock control module is replaced.
Vehicles with immobilizer V also have the Advanced Key option. The concept was taken from vehicles with immobilizer IV, where the number of needed system components was reduced. The buttons for the central locking on the door handles have been discontinued. Touching the capacity sensor on the exterior door handle activates the lock and unlock features.
Service Information
The comfort system central control module -J393- performs the diagnosis for the "Advanced Key" under the address "05 - access/start authorization".
There are function tests in "Guided Fault Finding", which can be found under "05 - access/start authorization (=> in -J393)".
Note. The function tests for "Advanced Key" components can only be included in the test plan if the type of control module is selected in "Vehicle System Test" "Guided Fault Finding" "05 - vehicle authorization system with keyless entry". This can be recognized when the type of control module appears with a black background. If "05 - vehicle authorization system with keyless entry" was not recognized automatically, then it needs to be selected manually by hand. Only then can the function tests for "Advanced Key" be included in the test plan.
