DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Note. It is necessary to generate a PCM readiness code if PCM memory is cleared, battery voltage is disconnected or PCM is disconnected. See CLEARING CODES in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If PCM was replaced, see PCM REPLACEMENT in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
Note. To properly diagnose vehicle, it is recommended to use VAG 1551 scan tool and VAG 1598/22 test box.
DTC P0102/16486 & P0103/16487: MAF CIRCUIT FAILURE
| IMPORTANT | Manufacturer used different varients of MAF sensor. Early varients had a 4-pin connector and later varients had a 5-pin connector. The following test is for a 4-pin connector type. If equipped with a 5-pin connector, use testing for 2001 vehicle. See DTC P0101/16485: MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR IMPLAUSIBLE SIGNAL, DTC P0102/16486: MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR SIGNAL TOO SMALL &/OR DTC P0103/16487: MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR SIGNAL TOO LARGE . |
- Inspect Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor connector for looseness and/or corrosion. Repair sensor connector as necessary. If sensor connector was okay, go to next step. If sensor connector was repaired, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article. Check MAF sensor fuse. Replace if necessary. Turn off all electrical accessories. Engine coolant fan must not run during test. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF sensor connector.
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, check voltage between MAF sensor connector terminals No. 1 and 3. Voltage should be 9-14.5 volts. If voltage is within specification, go to step 4 . If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
- Repair open wiring between MAF sensor and PCM as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGAMS»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/wiring-diagrams-engine-performance/#engine-performance-wiring-diagrams) article. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using DVOM, check resistance between MAF sensor connector terminal No. 2 and test box socket 12. Check resistance between MAF sensor connector terminal No. 4 and test box socket 13. Resistance should be a maximum of 1.5 ohms for each reading. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open circuit between MAF sensor connector and PCM connector. Erase DTC memory. - Using DVOM, check resistance between MAF sensor connector terminal No. 4 and test box socket 12. DVOM reading should be infinity. If reading is infinity, go to next step. If reading is not infinity, repair short circuit between MAF sensor connector and PCM connector. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Adjust DVOM to 20 VDC range. Using DVOM, check voltage between MAF sensor connector terminal No. 2 and ground. Check voltage between MAF sensor connector terminal No. 4 and ground. DVOM should indicate zero volts for both readings. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair short to voltage as necessary. Erase DTC memory. - Replace MAF sensor. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
DTC P0107/16491 & P0108/16492: MAP SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE
Note. MAP sensor influences boost pressure limit and fuel mixture at engine start-up.
- Inspect Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor connector for looseness and/or corrosion. Repair sensor connector as necessary. If sensor connector was okay, go to next step. If sensor connector was repaired, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAP sensor connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, check voltage between MAP sensor connector terminals No. 1 and 3, and terminals No. 2 and 3. Voltage should be 4.5-5.5 volts for each reading. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step. If voltage is within specification, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using DVOM, check resistance between MAP sensor connector terminals and specified test box sockets. MAP sensor connector terminal No. 1 and test box socket 61. MAP sensor connector terminal No. 2 and test box socket 62. MAP sensor connector terminal No. 3 and test box socket 67. Resistance should be 1.5 ohms or less. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. - Using DVOM, check resistance between MAP sensor connector terminals and specified test box sockets. MAP sensor connector terminal No. 2 and test box socket 61. MAP sensor connector terminal No. 3 and test box socket 61. MAP sensor connector terminal No. 3 and test box socket 62. Resistance should be infinity. If resistance is infinity, go to next step. If resistance is not infinity, repair short in wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. - Replace MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and generate a PCM readiness code. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article. After replacing MAP sensor, if MAP sensor signal is still implausible, replace PCM. See PCM REPLACEMENT in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
DTC P0112/16496 & P0113/16497: IAT SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE
- Inspect Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector for looseness and/or corrosion. Repair sensor connector as necessary. If sensor connector was okay, go to next step. If sensor connector was repaired, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAT sensor 2-pin connector. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using DVOM, check resistance between IAT sensor connector terminals and specified test box sockets. IAT sensor connector terminal No. 1 and test box socket 54. IAT sensor connector terminal No. 2 and test box socket 67. Resistance should be 1.5 ohms or less. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. - Using DVOM, check resistance between specified terminals. IAT sensor connector terminal No. 1 and ground. IAT sensor connector terminal No. 1 and test box socket 67. IAT sensor connector terminal No. 2 and ground. Resistance should be infinity. If resistance is infinity, go to next step. If resistance is not infinity, repair short in wiring harness as necessary. - Using a DVOM, check voltage between IAT sensor 2-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 and ground, then terminal No. 2 and ground. Voltage should be zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Using a DVOM, check resistance between IAT sensor terminals. Resistance should be 1.6-2.8 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace IAT sensor. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article. NOTE: If testing to this point has not identified a problem, failure is most likely an intermittent failure of IAT sensor.
- Using VAG 1551, monitor IAT sensor output. When IAT sensor reads approximately ambient temperature, remove IAT sensor from engine without disconnecting IAT sensor connector.
- Using VAG 1551, monitor IAT sensor output. Cool IAT sensor using a commercially available chilling spray. Observe IAT sensor output. If temperature value decreases, IAT sensor is okay. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article. If IAT sensor value does not decrease, replace IAT sensor. Erase DTC memory. DTC P0116/16500, P0117/16501 & P0118/16502: ECT SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE
- Inspect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector for looseness and/or corrosion. Repair sensor connector as necessary. If sensor connector was okay, go to next step. If sensor connector was repaired, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor 4-pin connector. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using DVOM, check resistance between ECT sensor connector terminals and specified test box sockets. ECT sensor connector terminal No. 1 and test box socket 53. ECT sensor connector terminal No. 3 and test box socket 67. Resistance should be 1.5 ohms or less. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. - Using DVOM, check resistance between specified terminals. ECT sensor connector terminal No. 1 and ground. ECT sensor connector terminal No. 1 and test box socket 67. ECT sensor connector terminals No. 1 and 3. ECT sensor connector terminal No. 3 and ground. Resistance should be infinity. If resistance is infinity, go to next step. If resistance is not infinity, repair short in wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. If resistance is not within specification, replace LDP. Erase DTC memory. - Disconnect No. 1 fuel injector electrical connector. Connect a noid light to No. 1 fuel injector electrical connector (harness side). Disconnect No. 2, 3 and 4 fuel injector electrical connectors. Briefly crank engine starter and observe noid light. Noid light should flicker. Repeat test for fuel injectors No. 2, 3 and 4.
- If noid light flickers, go to next step. If noid light does not flicker, turn ignition off. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM harness connector. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between the following terminals: Fuel injector No. 1 harness connector terminal No. 2 and test box socket 73. DTC P1558/17966 & P1559/17967: THROTTLE ACTUATOR/POSITION SENSOR FAILURE
- Inspect Throttle Valve Control Module (TVCM) 8-pin connector for looseness and/or corrosion. Repair connector as necessary. If connector was okay, go to next step. If connector was repaired, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TVCM 8-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check resistance between specified terminals. TVCM connector terminals No. 3 and 7. TVCM connector terminals No. 4 and 7. Voltage should be 9-14.5 volts for first measurement. Voltage should be 4-6 volts for second measurement. If voltage is within specification, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using DVOM, check resistance between TVCM connector terminals and specified test box sockets. TVCM connector terminal No. 3 and test box socket 69. TVCM connector terminal No. 4 and test box socket 62. TVCM connector terminal No. 7 and test box socket 67. Resistance should be 1.5 ohms or less. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. - Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using DVOM, check voltage between test box sockets No. 2 and 3, then 1 and 3.
- Voltage should be 10-14.5 volts for each reading. If voltage is within specification, erase DTC memory. DTC P1606/18014: ROUGH ROAD SIGNAL DETECTED
Note. If Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module senses a spinning wheel, it produces a rough road signal. When Powertrain Control Module (PCM) sees a rough road signal, misfire recognition is turned off. If a misfire DTC is stored, it is a subsequent malfunction which may be disregarded.
Note. This DTC may be stored if emission testing a front wheel drive vehicle with ABS/EDL, and only front wheels are turning while rear wheels are stationary.
- VAG 1551 is necessary to diagnose this code. Ensure PCM coding is correct. See PCM CODING in «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-self-diagnostics-introduction) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using a DVOM, check for a short or open circuit between PCM and ABS module. See appropriate wiring diagram in «WIRING DIAGAMS»(/audi/a4/b5-1999-2001/remont/wiring-diagrams-engine-performance/#engine-performance-wiring-diagrams) article. Repair as necessary. If wiring is okay, go to next step. If wiring is not okay, repair wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory.
