WARNINGFor safety reasons, use only electrically non-conductive 2C-adhesive when installing sunroof module using the materials listed below. The vehicle can only be used after the minimum curing time has elapsed.

Scheme 24: WATER DRAIN HOSES ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW
  1. Front Water Drain Hose Route the front water drain hoses through the A-pillars and have them end in the wheel housing over the wheel house liner. Cleaning, refer to «WATER DRAIN HOSES, CLEANING»(ref-496129-S17588323352012082100000)
  2. Frame For sunroof operation

Removing and installing bonded cover

WARNINGKeep adhesive surface free of dirt and grease. Only cut back adhesive surface shortly before installation. Do not prime or use a cleaning solution on the adhesive surface. Make sure there is a slight overlap at adhesive joining points, otherwise there may be leaks in these areas. Bonded panel must be inserted in the vehicle within a maximum of 10 minutes after start of application, otherwise the bonding properties of adhesive sealant material will be impaired. Observe minimum curing times for bonded panel, refer to SUNROOF PANEL

  1. Adhesive Bead for Panel 1 Cut back only just before installing a new panel. Apply new adhesive onto residual bead on body.
  2. Panel 1 NOTE: It is not possible to remove the panel 1 without damaging it. Use two V.A.G 1351/1 and the cutting wire 357 853 999 A to remove panel 1 Remove the molding on the front of the panel as well as on both sides 1 using a sharp carpet knife. Open the panel 2 all the way to the rear. Place the cutting wire between the glass panel 1 and the sunroof. Seal the top of the roof frame with tape to protect the paint. Attach the ends of the wire to the handles and cut the adhesive all the way through. When installing, panel 2 must be installed and closed. Clean new panel in adhesion area and prime. Apply adhesive onto residual adhesive bead. Insert panel into roof cutout. Align panel and press it evenly into roof cutout to stop. Secure panel in roof cutout with adhesive tape.
  3. Panel 2 Removing and installing, refer to «SUNROOF PANEL»(ref-496129-S08336870672012082100000)
  4. Panel 3 Bonded to roof module. Panel 2 removed. Roof molding removed, refer to «SUNROOF»(ref-496129-S20845077042012082100000) CAUTION: Cover neighboring paint surfaces with fabric-reinforced adhesive tape to protect against damage. Cut through adhesive along side wall frames using V.A.G 1561A and V.A.G 1561/22. Cut through adhesive bead on rear edge of panel 2. Cut through adhesive bead on forward edge of panel 3 using V.A.G 1561A and V.A.G 1561/2. Lift panel out of roof cutout using a suction lifter. When installing, panel 2 must be installed and closed. Clean new panel in adhesion area and prime. Apply adhesive onto residual adhesive bead. Insert panel into roof cutout. Align panel and press it evenly into roof cutout to stop. Secure panel in roof cutout with adhesive tape.
  5. Adhesive Bead for Panel 3 Cut back only just before installing a new panel. Apply adhesive onto residual adhesive bead on body.

Removing and installing moving panel

To remove, open sunroof completely.

Pull off cover -1- on body side from sunroof module to the side toward vehicle center.

Tilt open sunroof and pull off cover -2- to the side from sunroof panel -1-.

When installing, slide panel -1- sideways into retaining rail -2- on panel.

Remove bolts -arrows- on both sides of guide plate -1-.

Remove panel upward out of cutout.

When installing, tighten bolts to 3.5 Nm.

Glass sunroof panel, adjusting

Perform height adjustment at front and rear according to illustration to prevent wind noise.

Check height adjustment at each point, left and right, where rounded portion of roof opening merges with straight portion.

Sunroof panel should not be higher than roof at any point at front or lower than roof at any point at rear.

When adjusting sunroof panel height, start by running sunroof from open position (not tilted open) into closed position.

Loosen bolts -1- ; -2- and -3- a few turns.

Scheme 32: GUIDE AND CABLE
  1. Bolt 3.5 Nm.
  2. Sunroof Frame The rear guide rail is removed. Remove the bolts -1- from the front guide rail and then remove the guide rail.
  3. Guide with Cable Removal: Molded headliner removed, refer to «Removal and Installation»(ref-496058-S22585871132012082100000) . The sunroof motor is removed. Remove the retaining strip for the wind deflector. The sunroof panel is removed. -- Sunroof crossmember, removing, refer to «SUN SHADE»(ref-496129-S04128108022012082100000) -- Remove the rear guide rails. -- Remove the sun shade. Remove the bolts -6- and -7- from underneath and the bolt -9- «GUIDE AND CABLE»(ref-496129-S17896209252012082100000) from the top and then remove the entire cable guide. Install in reverse order of removal.
  4. Sunroof Motor Removing and installing, refer to «SUNROOF MOTOR»(ref-496129-S11439215432012082100000)
  5. Bolt 3.5 Nm.
  6. Bolt 3.5 Nm.

  8. Wind Deflector Retaining Strip Removed, refer to «GUIDE AND CABLE»(ref-496129-S17896209252012082100000)

  11. Rear Guide Hinge Remove the screws -12- to remove.
  12. Bolt 3.5 Nm.

Scheme 33: Remove the wind deflector retaining strip

Remove the center bolts -arrows- (2x) and then the left and right outer bolts -arrow- and then remove the retaining strip.

Front sun shade, removing

Headliner lowered.

Remove the sunroof crossmember.

Push the adjusting clip -1- with the pin for securing the spring through hose in the axle -2- in direction of arrow.

CAUTIONBe careful not to damage the paint when unlocking the gliding piece. Use adhesive tape in this area.

Remove the gliding piece -2- on both sides in -direction of arrow- from the sun shade arch -1- with a screwdriver.

Install the shade -arrow A - and align both holes -arrow B- in the axle and in the shaft.

Installing the front sun shade

Insert the flat axle -arrow- on the shade into the roof.

Position the sun shade arch -arrow- on the gliding piece.

Install the sun shade arch into the sun shade arch in direction of -arrow-.

When installing -arrow A-, the sun shade arch -1- must fit completely into the gliding piece -2- and lock -arrow B-.

Slide the sun shade arch to the rear and remove it from the guides after removing the sun shade arch.

Note. The illustration shows the gliding piece from inside the vehicle.

Rear sun shade, removing

Headliner lowered.

Remove the sunroof crossmember.

Push the adjusting clip -1- with the pin for securing the spring through hose in the axle in direction of -arrow-.

Remove the sun shade arch from the guides on the sunroof as illustrated.

Install the shade -arrow A - and align both holes -arrow B- in the axle and in the shaft.

Secure the shade from rotating with a wire pin as illustrated and remove the shade.

Installing the rear sun shade

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Install the clip on the axle with pliers after installing the sun shade.

The illustration show the clip in the correct position.

Note. It is now not possible to slide the shade -2- from side to side.

  1. Cross Member for Sunroof The headliner is just lowered and not removed. To remove, remove bolts -2-. Connecting parts at left -3- and right -5- remain in the vehicle.

Removal

Note. Remove motor only in >>roof closed<< position.

Close glass sunroof, use emergency operation if necessary. Refer to SUNROOF PANEL

Remove the reading lamp cover carefully using special tool 3370.

If applicable, disconnect the connection -1- from the hands-free microphone.

Tip front interior light/reading light down and remove it from vehicle headliner.

Disconnect electrical connectors.

Installation

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following
