WATER DRAIN HOSES, CLEANING

Note. For cleaning, it is recommended that you create your own assisting tool that resembles a speedometer inner cable in size and flexibility and is approximately 8 feet (2300 mm) in length or an equivalent tool.

Front Water Drain Hose

Front water drain hoses are routed in -A- pillars and end in wheel housing above wheel housing liner -arrow

Scheme 3

1. They are cleaned from the sunroof opening.

Rear Water Drain Hose

Rear water drain hoses are routed in C-pillars and end in wheel housing above wheel housing liner -arrow

Scheme 4

1. Cleaning is performed at lower end of hose.

Remove rear wheel housing liner, refer to REAR WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

Note. The complete roof module is glued to the body and must be removed using V.A.G 1561A and various cutting blades or cutting wires.

Tools for installation

Note. Due to the brief processing time of the adhesive (total of 10 minutes), 2 adhesive sets DA 004 600 A2 and 2 double cartridge pistols VAS 5237 are required for the installation and 2 people must apply adhesive onto adhesive residue on body starting from the same point and working in opposite directions. The beginning and the end of the adhesive bead must be applied so that there are no gaps in the bead to assure proper sealing.

Removing the roof module

Scheme 5

1. Panel -1- Included with the roof frame Cannot be removed undamaged without removing windshield. NOTE: Once the windshield is removed, the entire roof module -11- can be removed without damaging the panel -1-. 3. Panel -3- Already glued to module on a new roof module. Removing and installing, refer to «SUNROOF PANEL»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) Dimension -a- = 5 mm between rear edge of glass panel and forward edge of sheet metal panel
4. Rear Panel Sheet metal panel It is not possible to remove without damaging it. NOTE: Protect the top of the rear lid near the panel from damaging the paint with two-sided table before removing. Bend the rear corner of the metal cover approximately 90° upward with pliers. Cut through the side of the adhesive bead -6- with a V.A.G 1561/22 on both side of the metal panel. Cut through the rear adhesive bead -6- with the V.A.G 1561/11 straight through to the vehicle. Bend the metal panel approximately 90° upward and cut through the front adhesive bead -6- with a V.A.G 1561/11 straight through to the vehicle. Dimension -b- = 4.5 mm with rear lid closed between rear edge of sheet metal panel and rear lid.

6. Felt Strips Self-adhering, apply to the same location (Scheme 7)
7. Adhesive Bead for Sheet Metal Panel Cut back residual bead when installing a new panel. -- Cut flat the remaining adhesive material on flange using V.A.G 1561 and V.A.G 1561/10, do not remove all residue under any circumstances. -- Residual material acts as a base for the new adhesive sealing material. Apply at center on residual adhesive bead
8. Butyl Adhesive Sealing Cord After removing panel, remove residual butyl cord and apply a new one onto the same location again. NOTE: The butyl cord seals the panel from the body and must be absolutely tight. Route the ends so that there are no gaps. Diameter of butyl cord = 8 mm.
9. Supportive Beads NOTE: The support beads have been discontinued as of VIN 8 P5A 126 517. Cut back residual beads when installing a roof module. Do not bond the roof on these places. Use a 100 mm x 1 mm x 10 mm self-adhesive felt strip in its place.
10. Adhesive Bead for Roof Module Cut back residual beads when installing a roof module. Apply adhesive to body on the same location.
11. Sunroof Module Removal NOTE: The panel -1- will get damaged when removing the molding. Do not remove the headliner, but rather just lower it. Refer to «Removal and Installation»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim). -- Remove the trim on the A pillar; the sun visors, the grab handles, the rear roof trim panel and the interior lamps. -- Unclip the rear headliner in the center. -- Remove the headliner forward from the trim on the C- and D-pillars and lay it in the vehicle. Remove the crossmember for the sunroof. Refer to «SUN SHADE»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof). Remove roof trim molding «SUNROOF»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) Cover thoroughly all neighboring body surfaces to sunroof module all around using fabric-reinforced adhesive tape to protect paintwork. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the molding on the windshield when removing the molding on the panel -1-. Remove the molding on the edge of the glass with a sharp knife, on the front of the panel -1- and on the sides. Insert the V.A.G 1561/23 into the V.A.G 1561A and cut the adhesive beads on the roof module near the panel. Replace the V.A.G 1561/23 with a V.A.G 1561/22 and cut through the adhesive on the front of the roof module. Cut the side of the adhesive bead -9- along the roof up to the metal panel. Be careful not to damage the seal on the back of the cover -3-. Cut the adhesive bead for the roof between the cover 3 and the metal panel. NOTE: Cut through the support beads first if the vehicle has these. For easier access, remove the bolts form the cable guide. Refer to «GUIDE AND CABLE»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof). Cut through the left and right support beads with the V.A.G 1561/24. Install the bolts for the cable guide. Remove the complete roof off the vehicle with four people. NOTE: If there is any adhesive that did not get cut, use a cutting wire, part number 357 853 999 A and two pull handles V.A.G 1351/1 to cut through it now. (Scheme 9) Lift sunroof module (four people required) out of vehicle. Installing NOTE: If the same roof is to be reinstalled, then the remaining bead must only be cut just before installing. Cut back remaining adhesive sealant material on roof module and body flange using V.A.G 1561A and V.A.G 1561/10, do not remove all residue under any circumstances. Residual material acts as a base for the new adhesive sealing material. If windshield flange has been repaired or replaced, paint structure should be restored and if necessary, corrosion repair measures should be taken. Clean the surface with D 009 401 04 and then prime it with D 009 200 02. WARNING: Keep adhesive surface free of dirt and grease. Only cut back adhesive surface shortly before installation. Do not prime or use a cleaning solution on the adhesive surface. NOTE: Two people using two double cartridge pistols are required to apply the adhesive. Two window adhesive sets DA 004 600 A2 are required. When inserting roof, four people are required to lift module into vehicle and align. Install the spacer in the same place on the module (Scheme 6). For a new roof module, remove adhesive covers on spacers. Pull off cover strips on roof module adhesion surfaces. Clean adhesion areas with cleaning solution D 009 401 04. For a new roof module, apply primer D 009 200 02 to adhesion area on the module. Allow primer to air dry for 10 minutes. Apply the adhesive on the body side with a second person. CAUTION: Make sure there is a slight overlap at adhesive joining points, otherwise there may be leaks in these areas. Sunroof module must be inserted in the vehicle within a maximum of 10 minutes after start of application, otherwise the bonding properties of adhesive sealant material will be impaired. NOTE: When inserting roof, 4 people are required to lift roof over vehicle and insert into body. Insert roof module into vehicle. Distance -a- to sheet metal panel must be 5 mm. Press in roof completely onto spacers in roof cutout. Secure roof flush to body contour using tension straps at front and rear through the opened doors. For stronger pre-tension of sunroof module against vehicle, place plastic blocks (Styrofoam) onto panel 1 and panel 3, place T10038over it and tighten. After installing, perform a leak test before installing the headliner. NOTE: If a removed roof is reinstalled, panel 1 must also be installed in roof module «SUNROOF PANEL»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof).
12. Adhesive Bead for Panel 1 Cut residual bead only just before installing panel 1. Affix adhesive for panel 1 onto residual bead on body.

Scheme 6

Pull the protective fill off the spacers -2- and press them onto the module -1- as illustrated.

Scheme 7

Install the butyl cord (8 mm) -2- around the opening for the vehicle antenna and, if necessary, the felt strip -1- before installing a new metal panel.

Note. Check for leaks and route the ends of the butyl cord so that there are not gaps.

Peel the protective film off the felt strip and apply it to the body as illustrated.

Removing the Panel -1

Note. It is not possible to remove the panel undamaged without removing the windshield first.

Scheme 8

1. Panel -1- Remove the molding with a sharp carpet knife before removal.
2. Panel Molding -1- Delivery Remove the molding as close as possible to the edge of the glass using a sharp carpet knife -arrows-. CAUTION: Do not damage the windshield molding -3-.
3. Windshield Molding Be careful not to damage the windshield molding when removing the panel -1-.

Scheme 9

Use the 2 V.A.G 1351/1 and the 357 853 999A to cut through any adhesive, which was not completely cut before.

Scheme 10

1. Roof Molding To remove, unclip roof molding carefully clip by clip, starting at rear. To install, insert roof molding at front beneath panel -1- of sunroof module. When installing, press in roof molding in steps into roof, beginning from front.
2. Clip 10 x per side, adhered with double-sided adhesive tape -3-. Adhesion surface of clips must be free of dust and grease. When installing, clips must be positioned as shown at sides on side wall frames and then pressed onto body.
3. Double Sided Adhesive Tape Adhesion surface must be free of dust and grease, clean with cleaning solution D 009 401 04. After installing, clip must contact side wall frame as shown in magnified area of illustration.

Scheme 11

1. Wind Deflector Loosen the three front retainers -arrows- with a screwdriver and remove the wind deflector. Remove the bolt from the tilting mechanism -arrow A- and from the wind deflector -arrow B- from the outside toward the inside.

Wind Deflector, Removing

Open the sunroof completely.

Note. The wind deflector is clipped into the front rail -3x-.

Push the retainers -arrow- with a screwdriver apart and remove the wind deflector.

Remove the wind deflector bolt from the outside toward the inside.

Scheme 13

Remove the upper bolt -arrow- in the lever from the outside toward the inside.

Note. Panel 1 and panel 3 are bonded firmly to roof module and can only be cut out. Panel 1 cannot be removed without destroying it unless windshield is removed.

Removing and installing bonded cover

Scheme 15

1. Adhesive Bead for Panel 1 Cut back only just before installing a new panel. Apply new adhesive onto residual bead on body.
2. Panel 1 NOTE: It is not possible to remove the panel 1 without damaging it. Use two V.A.G 1351/1 and the cutting wire 357 853 999 A to remove panel 1 Remove the molding on the front of the panel as well as on both sides 1 using a sharp carpet knife. Open the panel 2 all the way to the rear. Place the cutting wire between the glass panel 1 and the sunroof. Seal the top of the roof frame with tape to protect the paint. Attach the ends of the wire to the handles and cut the adhesive all the way through. When installing, panel 2 must be installed and closed. Clean new panel in adhesion area and prime. Apply adhesive onto residual adhesive bead. Insert panel into roof cutout. Align panel and press it evenly into roof cutout to stop. Secure panel in roof cutout with adhesive tape.
3. Panel 2 Removing and installing, refer to «SUNROOF PANEL»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof)
4. Panel 3 Bonded to roof module. Panel 2 removed. Roof molding removed, refer to «SUNROOF»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) CAUTION: Cover neighboring paint surfaces with fabric-reinforced adhesive tape to protect against damage. Cut through adhesive along side wall frames using V.A.G 1561A and V.A.G 1561/22. Cut through adhesive bead on rear edge of panel 2. Cut through adhesive bead on forward edge of panel 3 using V.A.G 1561A and V.A.G 1561/2. Lift panel out of roof cutout using a suction lifter. When installing, panel 2 must be installed and closed. Clean new panel in adhesion area and prime. Apply adhesive onto residual adhesive bead. Insert panel into roof cutout. Align panel and press it evenly into roof cutout to stop. Secure panel in roof cutout with adhesive tape.
5. Adhesive Bead for Panel 3 Cut back only just before installing a new panel. Apply adhesive onto residual adhesive bead on body.

Removing and installing moving panel

To remove, open sunroof completely.

Pull off cover -1- on body side from sunroof module to the side toward vehicle center.

Scheme 17

Tilt open sunroof and pull off cover -2- to the side from sunroof panel -1-.

When installing, slide panel -1- sideways into retaining rail -2- on panel.

Scheme 18

Remove bolts -arrows- on both sides of guide plate -1-.

Scheme 19

Remove panel upward out of cutout.

When installing, tighten bolts to 3.5 Nm.

Glass sunroof panel, adjusting

Perform height adjustment at front and rear according to illustration to prevent wind noise.

Scheme 20

Check height adjustment at each point, left and right, where rounded portion of roof opening merges with straight portion.

Sunroof panel should not be higher than roof at any point at front or lower than roof at any point at rear.

When adjusting sunroof panel height, start by running sunroof from open position (not tilted open) into closed position.

Adjusting

Loosen bolts -1- ; -2- and -3- a few turns.

2. Sunroof Frame The rear guide rail is removed. Remove the bolts -1- from the front guide rail and then remove the guide rail.
3. Guide with Cable Removal: Molded headliner removed, refer to «Removal and Installation»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) . The sunroof motor is removed. Remove the retaining strip for the wind deflector. The sunroof panel is removed. -- Sunroof crossmember, removing, refer to «SUN SHADE»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) -- Remove the rear guide rails. -- Remove the sun shade. Remove the bolts -6- and -7- from underneath and the bolt -9- «GUIDE AND CABLE»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) from the top and then remove the entire cable guide. Install in reverse order of removal.

5. Bolt 3.5 Nm.

11. Rear Guide Hinge Remove the screws -12- to remove.

Remove the center bolts -arrows- (2x) and then the left and right outer bolts -arrow- and then remove the retaining strip.

Remove the bolt on the guide and cable

Remove the retaining strip for the wind deflector.

Remove the bolts from the top to remove the guide.

1. Glide Piece Inserted sideways on sun shade.
2. Sun Shade with Automatic Retractor The sunroof crossmember is removed: «Sunroof crossmember»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof). CAUTION: Sun shade is pre-tensioned by a spring and must be secured against unwinding before removing (Scheme 26) Remove the adjusting clip from the axle before removing, refer to «SUN SHADE»(/audi/a3/8p-2004-2008/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) To remove, slide roller to the side -in direction of arrow-. NOTE: The shade can only be inserted into the side that has the clip, which must be removed beforehand (Scheme 31)Secure axle from unwinding using a piece of wire and lift out sun shade on one side. Remove sun shade out of guides with sliders set off to the sides. NOTE: For the front sun shade, roller must be slid in opposite direction of arrow.

Scheme 26

Bring hole, located in axle and in shaft, into alignment by sliding sideways after removing the clip.

Lock axle and shaft -3- using a thin piece of wire -4- and secure it so that sun shade does not unwind.

Now sun shade can be removed from roof module.

If glide pieces -1- remain in guides, they must be removed and reinserted again before installing sun shade -2

Front sun shade, removing

Headliner lowered.

Remove the sunroof crossmember.

Push the adjusting clip -1- with the pin for securing the spring through hose in the axle -2- in direction of arrow.

Scheme 27

Remove the gliding piece -2- on both sides in -direction of arrow- from the sun shade arch -1- with a screwdriver.

Remove the sun shade arch -1- from the gliding piece -2- in -direction of arrow-.

Scheme 29

Remove the sun shade arch -1- from the gliding piece -2- in direction of arrow.

Scheme 30

Remove the clip -1- from the axle opposite direction of -arrow-.

Scheme 31

Install the shade -arrow A - and align both holes -arrow B- in the axle and in the shaft.

Secure the shade from rotating with a wire pin as illustrated and remove the shade.

Installing the front sun shade

Insert the flat axle -arrow- on the shade into the roof.

Scheme 34

Insert the other end in to the mount on the opposite side.

Install the clip on the axle with pliers after installing the shade.

Note. It is now not possible to slide the shade -2- from side to side.

Position the sun shade arch -arrow- on the gliding piece.

Install the sun shade arch into the sun shade arch in direction of -arrow-.

When installing -arrow A-, the sun shade arch -1- must fit completely into the gliding piece -2- and lock -arrow B-.

Slide the sun shade arch to the rear and remove it from the guides after removing the sun shade arch.

Rear sun shade, removing

Headliner lowered.

Remove the sunroof crossmember.

Push the adjusting clip -1- with the pin for securing the spring through hose in the axle in direction of -arrow-.

Remove the sun shade arch from the guides on the sunroof as illustrated.

Scheme 41

Install the shade -arrow A - and align both holes -arrow B- in the axle and in the shaft.

Secure the shade from rotating with a wire pin as illustrated and remove the shade.

Installing the rear sun shade

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Install the clip on the axle with pliers after installing the sun shade.

The illustration show the clip in the correct position.

Note. It is now not possible to slide the shade -2- from side to side.

Scheme 42

1. Cross Member for Sunroof The headliner is just lowered and not removed. To remove, remove bolts -2-. Connecting parts at left -3- and right -5- remain in the vehicle.

Removal

Note. Remove motor only in >>roof closed<< position.

Close glass sunroof, use emergency operation if necessary. Refer to SUNROOF PANEL

Remove the reading lamp cover carefully using special tool 3370.

If applicable, disconnect the connection -1- from the hands-free microphone.

Remove bolts -arrows-.

Tip front interior light/reading light down and remove it from vehicle headliner.

Disconnect electrical connectors.

Remove bolts -arrows-.
