General Information

From KW 22/04, the "chorus" has a second antenna connection (IF).

Radio generation II+ introduced from KW 45/06.

This uses two internal tuners with "phase diversity" for reception.

Further removal steps are the same as with the "symphony" radio.

Besides switching diversity, "phase diversity" is the second procedure for reducing reception interference.

At least two antennas with an amplifier and a radio -R- with two tuners are required.

If the signal received is interrupted, both signals are digitalized and separated in the tuners in the radio so that the disrupted signals are blocked out as much as possible.

If the reception signal is not disrupted, the radio constantly compares which antenna has the strongest reception. This is then transferred.

In this case, the second tuner checks the frequency band in the background for better reception frequencies for the selected station. If a better signal is found, this tuner switches to reception and the other to the background.

Communication with other vehicle systems takes place via the Infotainment CAN-Bus and Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface -J533-.

Fault finding is performed via "Guided Fault Finding" using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing & Information SystemVAS5051.

Transport Mode in "Symphony II+"

The "symphony" generation II+ has a special protection lock for the internal CD changer.

This is active when the unit is shifted and must be deactivated after installation.

In the same way, the transport protection must be activated before removing the unit.

SDARS RADIO SYSTEMS

Radio Systems

The radio systems are prepared for satellite radio -R146- use or satellite radio is installed.

Radio generation II+ introduced from KW 22/06.

This uses two internal tuners with "phase diversity" for reception.

Further removal steps are the same as with the "symphony" radio.

TELEPHONE SYSTEM

Mobile Phone Prep

The telephone transceiver is equipped with a Bluetooth Antenna -R152-. Using this, all cellular phones approved by Audi can be operated with the Bluetooth interface with the cell phone preparation installed in the vehicle.

It is not possible to connect other devices via Bluetooth, for example headset, laptop, PDA, or similar.

Cell Phone Preparation Preliminary Setup

NAVIGATION SYSTEM

Description

RNS-E navigation system is an enhancement of the established navigation system II-D. The function selection switch is integrated in the unit (MMI operation). A DVD is used as the navigation CD.

Screen folds away. DVD drive and two MP3 card readers are located behind.

In addition to the navigation system, the RNS-E has a radio, two MP3 card readers and connections for Navigation/TV Tuner -J415- and CD Changer -R41-. The DVD drive can play music CDs.

Fault finding is performed via "Guided Fault Finding" using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing & Information SystemVAS5051.

STEERING COLUMN ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS CONTROL MODULE

Description

The steering column electronic systems control module -J527- is a part of the steering column switch module. The steering column switch module consists of

1. Left and right steering column switch
2. Airbag spiral spring
3. Steering Angle Sensor -G85
4. Ignition/Starter Switch -D
5. Steering column electronic systems control module

The steering column electronic systems control module exchanges data between vehicle control modules (e.g. Vehicle Electrical System Control Module -J519-) and steering column modules (e.g. steering column switch) and steering wheel modules (e.g. airbag).

In addition, multi-function steering wheel button signals are process and relayed via CAN BUS.

Fault finding is performed via "Guided Fault Finding" using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing & Information System VAS5051.

MULTIFUNCTION STEERING WHEEL

Description

Buttons are integrated in the steering wheel for easier operation of the radio -R-, cellular telephone -R54-, navigation and CD changer -R41-.

With Tiptronic (automatic transmission), additional switches are installed.

The electronics integrated in the steering wheel take over signal processing from the buttons and transfer signals via the LIN data bus (single wire bus) to the steering column electronics control module -J527-. The conversion to CAN BUS (comfort) takes place there.

The multi-function steering wheel is part of the complete steering column switch module (SMLS) system and delivers data via the LIN data bus to the steering column electronics control module.

The individual button blocks and the Tiptronic switch can be replaced separately.

The electronics inside the steering wheel cannot be replaced individually. If faulty, the entire steering wheel must be replaced.

Fault finding is performed via "Guided Fault Finding" using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing & Information SystemVAS5051.

After activation, the internal CD changer drive is in transport position.

After replacing a "symphony II+", transport mode must be deactivated after installation.

After about 5 seconds, "TRANSPORT" appears on the radio display.

SATELLITE RADIO, ACTIVATING

When using for first time or when replacing satellite radio -R146- tuner, it must be enabled (activated) by the provider (XM or Sirius).

The subscription and application for activation can coincide with submission of all necessary data (US postal address, credit card number, radio ID (XM) or SID (Sirius)) to the provider's call center.

Only SIRIUS

SIRIUS sends the activation sequence 6 times within the first hour after apply for the activation. If no successful activation results, another activation sequence must be requested at the SIRIUS call center.

Requirements

1. Customer has subscribed to XM or Sirius.
2. Satellite radio is installed and connected.
3. The radio -R- /operating electronics/navigation system control module -J402- is adapted/coded.
4. Ignition switched on.

Procedure

Turn on the radio/operating electronics/navigation system control module and select a satellite radio -R146- reception range.

Attempt to receive "free" channels in XM (e.g. channel 1) or Sirius band (only channel 184).

Change location if necessary.

If free channels can be received clearly, the activation information sent by the provider (XM or Sirius) can also be received clearly.

A poor reception situation can prevent a successful activation even though activation information is being broadcast. In this case, vehicle location must be changed (an activation is also possible while vehicle is moving). There are e.g. workshops, garages, parking buildings, underground garages, fuel filling stations with extensive roofs and all other parking areas with signal shadows must be avoided.

In built-up areas with terrestrial radio system coverage (so-called terrestrial repeaters) as well as inner cities, activation via a repeater is possible instead of satellite.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM, ERROR MESSAGES ON SCREEN

1. Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051

If there is a malfunction in the system, either a fault is saved in the DTC and/or an error message is given on the Operating Electronics, Navigation Control Module -J402- display.

At this time, the following error messages can be shown on the operating electronics/navigation system control module display.

See if DVD drive can read a replacement DVD.

INSIDE MICROPHONE, FUNCTION TEST

With BOSE sound, and inside microphone -R74- is installed to determine interior noise (AudioPilot). This is switched directly with the amplifier -R12-. If interior noise increases, the amplifer (AudioPilot) automatically increases volume according to a predetermined pattern.

After turning on the radio -R-, the amplifier determines the gauge of the inside microphone voltage supply. If the result is OK, there is no reaction.

In contrast, if no inside microphone is installed, three short tones sound one after another.

In case of short circuit, three individual tones are heard.

Function Test

Turn on the radio and tune in a station.

Set the volume to approximately "20".

Now lightly tap on the inside microphone (front interior light -W1-) several times.

The volume of the station selected on the radio must increase noticeably during the tapping. The procedure is done slowly.

Stop tapping.

The volume of the station selected on the radio must decrease noticeably.

RADIO, CHORUS/CONCERT

Remove the key.

Open the glove box.

Insert two clips on T10057 in release slits on CD Changer -R41- until they engage. Points on the grip eyelets of tool face outward.

Scheme 42

Remove CD changer from mounting frame.

Disconnect the connector from the CD changer.

Remove T10057 by pushing locking tabs on CD changer.

Installing

Connect harness connector.

Slide CD changer into mounting frame until it engages.

Check the wiring connection to radio (not radio generation II+) after installing. Refer to WIRE CONNECTIONS, RADIO AND CD CHANGER, THROUGH KW 44/06, CHECKING .

IPOD BASEPLATE

1. Trim removal wedge 3409

Switch off all electrical consumers.

Remove the key.

Remove iPod -1- from iPod Baseplate -R192-.

Remove the key.

Remove the cellular telephone -R54- from the telephone baseplate and unclip it.

Turn the telephone baseplate -R126- in -direction of arrow 1- and then remove it in -direction of arrow 2- from the instrument panel.

Lower the rear molded headliner. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Disconnect the connectors -4- on the satellite radio and the coupling.

Disconnect the cable ties along the antenna wire up to the antenna -R11- -1- on the roof -2-.

Remove nut -3- (6 Nm).

Remove the antenna -1- from the roof -2-.

Installing

Mount the antenna -1- on the roof -2- and align it with the drive direction.

Lay antenna wires in opening on antenna base -arrow- so nut -3- (6 Nm) can be turned.

The antenna wires must lie in the nut opening -3-.

Align the antenna -1- one more time with the drive direction before tightening the nut -3-.

Perform further installation in reverse order.

TELEPHONE TRANSCEIVER

Note. All vehicles with a telephone and/or navigation and/or an auxiliary heater have a telephone/navigation system/auxiliary heater antenna -R66- (roof antenna). The antenna wires are connected to the cellular telephone amplifier -R86- and/or to the navigation system with CD drive control module -J401- at the left side of the luggage compartment. The trim must be removed from the telephone/navigation system/auxiliary heater antenna up to the control module brackets inside the luggage compartment at the rear and on the left and right side when replacing the telephone/navigation system/auxiliary heater antenna.

Removing

Remove the trim panels on the left and right sides of the luggage compartment. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the trim on the left and right D-pillars. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Lower the rear molded headliner. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove nut -2- (5 Nm).

Scheme 68

Disconnect the antenna wire connectors from the cellular telephone amplifier/navigation system with CD drive control module/auxiliary heater radio receiver.

Remove the telephone/navigation system/auxiliary heater antenna -1- from the roof.

Installing

Mount the telephone/navigation system/auxiliary heater antenna -1- on the roof and align it with the drive direction.

Install the antenna wires -3- into the slot on the antenna base -arrow- and install the nut -2- (5 Nm).

The antenna wire -3- must be inside the slit in the nut -2-.

Align the telephone/navigation system/auxiliary heater antenna -2- in drive direction again before tightening nut -3-.

Perform further installation in reverse order.

OPERATING ELECTRONICS, NAVIGATION CONTROL MODULE

Special tools and workshop equipment required

1. Radio Removal Tool T10057

If control module is replaced, select "Replacement" function for appropriate control module in "Guided Fault-Finding" routine using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051.

Switch off all electrical consumers.

Remove the key.

Removing

Place T10057 -arrows- in release slits on Operating Electronics, Navigation Control Module -J402- until they engage. Points on grip eyes face outward.

Scheme 69

Remove Operating Electronics, Navigation Control Module from instrument panel.

Release connectors on Operating Electronics, Navigation Control Module and remove it.

Remove T10057 by pushing locking tabs on Operating Electronics, Navigation Control Module to do so.

Installing

Connect all harness connectors.

Slide Operating Electronics, Navigation Control Module straight into instrument panel until it engages in installation frame.

NAVIGATION/TV TUNER

Special tools and workshop equipment required

1. Radio Removal Tool T10057

Switch off all electrical consumers.

Remove the key.

Removing

Insert the two clips on the T10057 into the slits on the navigation/TV tuner -J415- until they engage. Points on grip eyes face outward.

Scheme 70

Remove navigation/TV tuner from its frame.

Release connectors on navigation/TV tuner and remove it.

Remove T10057 by pushing locking tabs on navigation/TV tuner to do so.

Installing

Connect all harness connectors.

Slide Navigation/TV Tuner -J415- into installation frame until it engages.

RADIO/NAVIGATION DISPLAY CONTROL MODULE

Special tools and workshop equipment required

1. Radio Removal Tool T10057

If control module is replaced, select "Replacement" function for appropriate control module in "Guided Fault-Finding" routine using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051.

Switch off all electrical consumers.

Remove the key.

Removing

Place T10057 -arrows- in release slits on Radio/Navigation Display Control Module -J503- until they engage. Points on grip eyes face outward.

Scheme 71

Remove radio/navigation display control module from instrument panel.

Release connectors on radio/navigation display control module and remove it.

Remove T10057 by pressing locking tabs on radio/navigation display control module.

Installing

Connect all harness connectors.

Slide radio/navigation display control module straight into instrument panel until it engages in installation frame.

If control module is replaced, select "Replacement" function for appropriate control module in "Guided Fault-Finding" routine using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051.

Removing

Disconnect battery ground wire. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation .

Observe airbag system safety precautions. Refer to General Information .

Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove steering column switch module. Refer to FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS .

Remove bolt -arrow- (2 Nm) below spiral spring.

Scheme 72

The Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module -J527- is secure to steering column module with two spring retainers.

Release springs -1- and -2- with a small screwdriver.

Scheme 73

Remove steering column electronic systems control module downward from steering column module.

Installing

Observe airbag system safety precautions. Refer to General Information .

Install in reverse order of removal.

Make sure that all connections have engaged and lines lie in proper guides.

MULTIFUNCTION BUTTONS

Two versions of the multifunction steering wheel are used.

Make sure that all connections have engaged and lines lie in proper guides.

MULTIFUNCTION BUTTONS, WITH ROLLER BUTTONS

Removing

Disconnect battery ground wire. Refer to [For engine(s) CBRA, BPY, CCTA, CBFA] Removal and Installation .

Observe airbag system safety precautions. Refer to General Information .

Remove driver's airbag. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Disconnect harness connector -1- at button -2-.

Slide button -2- out of steering wheel in -direction of arrow-.

Turn the button around.

Disconnect the connector -2- to tiptronic switch from multifunction button -1- and remove button.

Removing

Remove driver's airbag. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Disconnect trim ring from steering wheel.

Slide multifunction button -2- out of steering wheel in -direction of arrow-.

Turn the button around.

Disconnect the connector -2- from the multifunction button -1-.

Remove screw -arrow- and remove Tiptronic switch downward.
