AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS

SERVICE INTERVALS

Check fluid level every 15,000 miles. Change transaxle fluid and filter every 30,000 miles under severe driving conditions.

Transmission

With transmission at normal operating temperature, park vehicle on level surface. Place selector lever in Park or Neutral position and apply parking brake. Allow engine to idle. Ensure fluid level is between marks on dipstick.

Final Drive

Place vehicle on level surface. Fluid level must be to edge of fill hole on side of case. If level is too high, this may be caused be leaking seals between transmission and final drive.

Transmission - Use Dexron-II ATF.

Final Drive - Use API G50 (Synthetic), SAE 75W-90.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

DRAINING & REFILLING

Remove oil pan and clean. Remove filter and allow oil to drain. Install new filter and replace oil pan.

ADJUSTMENTS

Note. Information on throttle cable and neutral safety switch is not available from the manufacturer.

Note. Selector lever should not move out of Park, until brake pedal is pressed down.

AUTOMATIC SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

  1. Remove gear selector lever handle and console cover to access gear selector assembly. Place gear selector lever in Reverse.
  2. Clearance between gear selector lever and solenoid switch valve should be.04" (1.0 mm). (Scheme 1) If clearance is not correct, loosen retaining screws and adjust.

SELECTOR LEVER CABLE

Remove center console. Place gear selector lever in Park. Loosen the cable clamp sleeve nut. Place shifter lever on the transaxle in Park position. Tighten nut on clamp to specification. See the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Check all gearshift selector lever positions. Replace center console.

STEERING COLUMN CABLE

Remove center console. See INSTRUMENT PANEL article. Turn ignition switch to ON position. There should be.047-70" (1.2-1.7 mm) gap between locking pin and lock flap. (Scheme 2) If gap is incorrect, loosen lock nut and adjust.

THROTTLE CABLE

Note. Adjust accelerator controls so transmission throttle lever is at zero throttle position with throttle closed. If adjustment is incorrect, shift speeds and transmission main line pressure will also be incorrect.

  1. Remove throttle control cover. Disconnect cruise control linkage (if equipped). Loosen throttle cable adjusting nuts, and remove accelerator cable-top-mounting bracket retaining clip.
  2. Turn throttle cable cam to full throttle position and hold. Insert a11/16" shim between accelerator pedal and pedal stop. Push pedal until it touches spacer, and hold pedal in this position.
  3. Pull accelerator pedal cable housing until all slack is removed. Install locking clip. Lightly pull transmission throttle cable until spring pressure (resistance) of transmission kickdown is felt.
  4. Turn adjusting nut (closest to transmission) against bracket and tighten other nut. Release throttle cable cam and accelerator pedal. Remove spacer and install throttle control covering. NOTE: Pressure point for full throttle position of accelerator pedal must be about 5/8-13/16" (16-20 mm) from pedal stop.
