Steering Column Audi 5000 S

DESCRIPTION

A 2-piece collapsible steering column assembly is used. The steering shaft uses an offset slip-joint that engages the flange tube.

Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Loosen flange tube-to-pinion shaft clamp bolt. Remove steering wheel. Insert screwdriver through access hole at bottom of switch cover to loosen clamp.
2. Remove switch assembly. Disconnect ignition switch wiring. Place ignition switch in "ON" position. Center punch steering lock retaining shear bolts.
3. Drill out shear bolts. Remove switch. Unbolt mounting flange from under dash. Remove steering column and shaft as a unit.

Scheme 1

1. Place column assembly in vehicle. Finger tighten steering lock shear bolts. Check operation of lock. Bolt mounting flange onto bracket. Connect ignition wiring.
2. Install flange tube over steering column pins. Press pinion shaft in place. Holding flange tube and shaft together with pliers, check length of shaft protruding from upper end of column.
3. Adjust by moving flange tube on pinion shaft until a distance of 2.56" (65 mm) is obtained. (Scheme 2) Tighten shear bolts until heads twist off. Install switch assembly flush with dashboard.
4. With wheels in a straight-ahead position, install steering wheel. Tighten steering wheel retaining nut. Clearance between wheel and switch assembly should be.118" (3 mm). Adjust clearance (if necessary). Tighten flange tube-to-pinion shaft clamp bolt.

Disassembly

Remove retaining ring, spring and support ring. Pull steering shaft out of column from the bottom. Press bearing race from column (if necessary).

Reassembly

Examine bearing race. Replace bearing race if excessively worn. Slide steering shaft back into column tube. Replace support ring and spring. Use a new retaining ring to lock shaft in place.
