TRANSMISSION CODES

SERVICE INTERVALS

Check fluid level every 15,000 miles. Change transaxle fluid every 30,000 miles under under servere driving conditions.

Transmission

With transmission at normal operating temperature, park vehicle on level surface. Place selector lever in "P" or "N" position and apply parking brake. Allow engine to idle. Remove dipstick, wipe clean and insert. Remove dipstick and check that fluid level is between marks on dipstick.

Final Drive

Place vehicle on level surface. Fluid level must be up to edge of fill hole on side of case. If level is too high, this may indicate fluid transfer between transmission and final drive caused by leaking seals.

Note. Normal fluid color on late production vehicles is Red/Brown. This is normal.

Use Dexron II ATF.

Use API GL-5, SAE 90.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

DRAINING & REFILLING

  1. Remove transaxle protection plate (if equipped). Remove rear pan bolts and loosen front pan bolts. Carefully lower pan and drain as much fluid as possible. Remove oil pan and pour out remaining fluid. Remove filter. Clean oil pan in solvent and dry.
  2. Install new filter and tighten screws to 27 INCH lbs. (3 a new gasket. Tighten oil pan bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Install protection plate and tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m). Add 3.2 qts. (3.0L) of transaxle fluid and check fluid level.

SECOND BRAKE BAND

  1. Adjust brake band with transaxle in a horizontal position only. Loosen adjustment screw lock nut. Tighten brake band adjustment screw to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
  2. Loosen adjustment screw again, then tighten to 45 INCH lbs. (5 N.m). Back off screw 2 turns on 087 or 2 1/2 turns on 089 transaxles. Tighten lock nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m).

SELECTOR LEVER CABLE

Remove center console. Place gearshift selector lever in "P". Loosen clamping nut. Place shift lever on transaxle to Park. Tighten nut on cable to 72 INCH lbs. (8 N.m).

4000 Series (087 Transaxle)

  1. Engine must be off at operating temperature and accelerator in idle position. Place selector lever in "P" position. Apply parking brake.
  2. Loosen adjusting nut on throttle cable at transaxle. Remove retaining clips for ball sockets of push and pull rods. Pry ball sockets from relay bracket levers.
  3. Rotate pull rod relay lever counterclockwise to stop. With relay lever against stop, loosen pull rod lock nut and turn ball socket until it fits easily on relay lever ball stud.
  4. Tighten lock nut. Install push rod socket on relay lever. Install both ball socket retaining clips.
  5. Loosen nut on push rod. Slide push rod apart on transaxle operating lever is in closed-throttle position and throttle body lever is against idle stop. Tighten nut on push rod. NOTE: Ensure push rod fits easily on transaxle operating lever.
  6. Loosen lock nut located below adjusting nut on throttle cable. Depress accelerator pedal to stop on floor and hold.
  7. Turn adjusting nut until transaxle operating lever moves, in direction of arrow, to stop. Tighten lock nut.
  8. To check adjustment, push throttle lever against idle stop. Transaxle operating lever must be in closed-throttle position. Place accelerator pedal in full-throttle position, WITHOUT engaging kickdown. Throttle valve lever must contact full-throttle stop and kickdown spring in push rod must NOT be compressed.
  9. Press accelerator pedal to stop (kickdown position). Transaxle operating lever must contact stop and kickdown spring in push rod must be compressed. Distance "A" on push rod must be 13/32" (10.5 mm).

4000 Series (089 Transaxle)

  1. Engine must be off at operating temperature and accelerator in idle position. Place selector lever in "P" position. Apply parking brake.
  2. Loosen throttle cable adjusting nut at transaxle. Adjusting nut is similar to the 087 transaxle.
  3. Loosen lock nuts for throttle cable at bracket on valve cover. Pull sleeve on throttle cable in direction of arrow until resistance is felt. NOTE: Throttle valve must remain closed and transaxle operating lever must be in closed-throttle position.
  4. Turn adjusting nut No. 1 until it seats against bracket. Tighten lock nut No. 2 to 84 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
  5. Loosen lock nut located below throttle cable adjusting nut at transaxle end of cable. Press accelerator pedal to stop on floor and hold during adjustment.
  6. Turn adjusting nut at transaxle until transaxle operating lever seats against stop. Tighten lock nut located below adjusting nut.
  7. To check adjustment, push throttle lever against idle stop. Transaxle operating lever must be in closed-throttle position. Push accelerator to full throttle position (without kickdown).
  8. Throttle lever must contact full throttle stop and kickdown spring in ball socket housing must NOT be compressed.
  9. Depress accelerator pedal to stop on floor in kickdown position. Transaxle operating lever must contact stop and kickdown spring in ball socket housing MUST be compressed. Make sure distance "A" is 5/16" (8 mm).

5000 Series

  1. Engine must be off at operating temperature and accelerator in idle position. Place selector lever in "P" position. Apply parking brake.
  2. Disconnect push and pull rods for transaxle accelerator linkage. Unhook cruise control linkage. Move lever for pull rod to stop.
  3. Turn pull rod ball socket so pull rod fits easily on ball stud. Adjust push rod so shift lever on transaxle contacts closed-throttle stop. Ensure push rod can be installed on transaxle without tension.
  4. Remove push rod on transaxle shift lever. Press accelerator pedal to stop on floor and hold in this position during adjustment. Push transaxle shift lever against kickdown stop on transaxle.
  5. Using pliers, pull accelerator cable to the end of its travel and tighten screw in clamp. Ensure transaxle shift lever is on kickdown stop.
  6. If necessary, adjust accelerator pedal cable. Attach push rod to transaxle shift lever and lock in position.
  7. To check adjustment, push throttle valve lever against idle stop. Transaxle shift lever must be in closed throttle position. Push accelerator pedal to full throttle position (with no kickdown).
  8. Throttle valve lever must be on full throttle stop and spring must NOT be compressed. Press accelerator pedal to kickdown stop. Transaxle shift lever must be on stop and spring compressed about 5/16".
  9. Release accerator pedal. Connect cruise control linkage and adjust if necessary.
  1. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. DO NOT depress brake pedal. Gearshift lever must not be able to be moved from "P".
  2. Depress brake pedal. Gearshift lever should can now be moved out of "P" position with brake pedal depressed.
  3. To adjust switch, turn ignition on with engine off. Depress brake pedal. Position solenoid switch (on bottom of gearshift lever) so there is .004" (.1 mm) clearance. Release brake pedal.
  4. Tab on solenoid lever must block movement of headless screw on gearshift lever. Before installing console, ensure wiring harness is routed around outside of relay and shift lock.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH

Neutral safety switch is located in shift console. Remove console cover and adjust switch so that engine starts in "P" and "N" positions only.
