- Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap (A). Wet the radiator cap seal with engine coolant, then install it on a commercially available pressure tester (B).
- Apply a pressure of 93.3-122.7 kPa (0.951 - 1.251 kgf/cm 2 , 13.53-17.79 psi).
- Check for a drop in pressure.
- If the pressure drops, replace the radiator cap.
Scheme 3
- Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap, and fill the radiator with engine coolant to the base of the filler neck.
- Attach a commercially available pressure tester (A) to the radiator, and apply a pressure of 93.3-122.7 kPa (0.951-1.251 kgf/cm 2 , 13.53-17.80 psi).
- Inspect for engine coolant leaks and a drop in pressure.
- Remove the tester, then reinstall the radiator cap.
Scheme 4
- Disconnect the 2P connectors from the radiator fan motor (A) and the A/C condenser fan motor (B).
- Test each motor by connecting battery power to terminal No. 2 and ground to terminal No. 1.
- If either motor fails to run or does not run smoothly, replace it (see «FAN, FAN MOTOR, AND SHROUD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
Thermostat Test
Replace the thermostat if it is stuck in the open position at room temperature.
To test a closed thermostat
Scheme 5
- Suspend the thermostat (A) in a container of water. Do not let the thermometer and the thermometer (B) touch the bottom of the hot container.
- Heat the water and check the temperature with a thermometer. Check the temperature at which the thermostat first opens, and at which it is fully open.
- Measure the lift height of the thermostat when it is fully open. Standard Thermostat Lift Height: Above 10.0 mm (0.394 in) Starts Opening: 169-176 °F (76-80 °C) Fully Open: 194°F (90°C)
Scheme 6
- Remove the timing belt (see «TINNING BELT REMOVAL»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#cylinder-head) ).
- Turn the water pump pulley counterclockwise, and check that it turns freely. If it does not turn freely, replace the water pump (see «WATER PUMP INSPECTION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ). NOTE: When you check the water pump, you may see a small amount of "weeping" from the bleed holes (A). This is normal.
- Install the timing belt (see «TIMING BELT INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#cylinder-head__timing-belt-installation) ).
Scheme 7
- Drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT REPLACEMENT»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
- Remove the timing belt (see «TINNING BELT REMOVAL»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#cylinder-head) ).
- Remove the timing belt adjuster (see «TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#cylinder-head) ).
- Remove the five bolts securing the water pump (A), then remove the water pump.
- Inspect and clean the mating surface of the engine block.
- Install the water pump with a new O-ring (B).
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
- Install the timing belt adjuster (see «TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#cylinder-head) ).
- Install the timing belt (see «TIMING BELT INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#cylinder-head__timing-belt-installation) ).
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, then bleed the air from the cooling system (see «COOLANT CHECK»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
Scheme 8
- Check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir. Make sure it is between the MAX mark (A) and the MIN mark (B).
- If the coolant level in the coolant reservoir is at or below the MIN mark, add coolant to bring it between the MIN and MAX marks, then inspect the cooling system for leaks.
- Check the coolant level in the radiator, and add Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 into the radiator up to the base of the filler neck, if needed. NOTE: Always use Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2. Using a non-Acura coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail. Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 is a mixture of 50 % antifreeze and 50 % water. Do not add water.

- Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap.
- Loosen the drain plug (A) and drain the coolant.
- Install a rubber hose (A) on the drain bolt (B) located at the rear of the engine block, then loosen the drain bolt.
- When the coolant stops draining, tighten the drain bolt. Remove the rubber hose.
- Tighten the radiator drain plug securely.
- Remove, drain, and reinstall the coolant reservoir.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX mark (A) with Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2.
- Pour Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 into the radiator up to the base of the filler neck. NOTE: Always use Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2. Using a non-Acura coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail. Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 is a mixture of 50 % antifreeze and 50 % water. Do not add water. Engine Coolant Capacities (Including the coolant reservoir capacity of 0.675 L (0.1783 US gal)): At Coolant Change: 6.7 L (1.77 US gal) After Engine Overhaul: 8.6 L (2.27 US gal)
- Loosely install the radiator cap.
- Start the engine, and let it run until it warms up (the radiator fan comes on at least twice).
- Turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator, and add Acura Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed.
- Put the radiator cap on securely, then run the engine again, and check for leaks.
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
- If the Maintenance Minder required replacing the engine coolant, reset the Maintenance Minder (see «MAINTENANCE MINDER™»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/schedule/#maintenance) ), and this procedure is complete. If the Maintenance Minder did not require engine coolant replacement, go to step 15.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.
- Connect the HDS to the DLC (see «HOW TO USE THE HDS (HONDA DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM)»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/testing-diagnostics/#fuel-and-emissions-systems) ).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.
- Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the PCM. If it does not communicate, troubleshoot the DLC circuit (see «PCM POWER AND GROUND CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/testing-diagnostics/#pgm-fi-system) ).
- Select GAUGES in the BODY ELECTRICAL with the HDS.
- Select ADJUSTMENT in the GAUGES with the HDS.
- Select MAINTENANCE MINDER in the ADJUSTMENT with the HDS.
- Select RESET in the MAINTENANCE MINDER with the HDS.
- Select MAINTENANCE SUB ITEM 5 RESET with the HDS.

- Drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT REPLACEMENT»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
- Remove the intake air duct (see step 2 «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#intake-manifold-and-exhaust-system) ).
- Remove the thermostat cover, then remove the thermostat.
- Install the new thermostat with a new rubber seal, then install the thermostat cover.
- Install the intake air duct (see step 6 under «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#intake-manifold-and-exhaust-system) ).
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed the air from the cooling system (see «COOLANT CHECK»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.

- Drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT REPLACEMENT»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
- Do the battery removal procedure (see «BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/body-electrical/#battery) ).
- Remove the intake manifold (see «REMOVAL»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#intake-manifold-and-exhaust-system) ).
- Remove the EGR pipe (see «EGR VALVE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/auxiliary-emission-control-systems/#egr-system) ).
- Disconnect the EGR valve connector, the ECT sensor 1 connector, the upper radiator hose, the lower radiator hose, the heater hoses, and the water bypass hoses from the water passage.
- Remove the water passage and related parts.
- Install the water passage in the reverse order of removal.
- Install the EGR pipe (see «EGR VALVE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/auxiliary-emission-control-systems/#egr-system) ).
- Install the intake manifold (see «INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#intake-manifold-and-exhaust-system) ).
- Do the battery installation procedure (see «BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/body-electrical/#battery) ).
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed the air from the cooling system (see «COOLANT CHECK»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.

- Unclamp the ATF cooler hose clamps (A).

- Disassemble the A/C condenser fan shroud assembly.

- Remove the radiator fan shroud assembly (A).
- Remove the harness clamp (B) and the wire harness (C).
- Disassemble the radiator fan shroud assembly.

- Reassemble the radiator fan shroud assembly.
- Install the wire harness (A) and the harness clamp (B).
- Install the radiator fan shroud assembly (C), then tighten the bolts (D).
- Connect the upper radiator hose (A).
- Install the harness clamp (B), then connect the ECT sensor 2 connector (C), the ECT sensor 2 sub harness connector (D), and the radiator fan motor connector (E).
- Install the battery base (see step 54 under «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#engine-assembly__engine-installation) ).
- Do the battery installation procedure (see «BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/body-electrical/#battery) ).

- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.

- Remove the radiator fan shroud assembly (see «RADIATOR FAN SHROUD REMOVAL»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
- Disconnect the lower radiator hose (A).
- Remove the power steering hose clamp (B).
- Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (C) from the transmission, then plug the ATF cooler hoses and the lines.
- Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A), then plug the ATF cooler hoses and the lines.
- Remove the radiator upper brackets (A), then pull up the radiator (B).
- Remove the other parts from the radiator.
- Install the radiator in the reverse order of removal. Make sure the upper and lower cushions are set securely.
- Install the battery base (see step 54 under «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#engine-assembly__engine-installation) ).
- Do the battery installation procedure (see «BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/body-electrical/#battery) ).
- Refill the transmission with ATF (see «ATF LEVEL CHECK»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission__atf-level-check) ).
- Fill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed the air from the cooling system (see «COOLANT CHECK»(/acura/zdx/i-2009-2013/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system) ).
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
