INTRODUCTION
Note. The CHECK ENGINE light is now referred to as Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). The MIL is displayed in instrument cluster as CHECK ENGINE. Electronic Control Module (ECM) may also be referred to as Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
The following diagnostic steps will help prevent overlooking a simple problem. This is also where to begin diagnosis for no-start condition.
The first step in diagnosing any driveability problem is verifying the customer's complaint with a test drive under the conditions the problem reportedly occurred.
Before entering self-diagnostics (if equipped), perform a careful and complete visual inspection. Most engine control problems result from mechanical breakdowns, poor electrical connections or damaged/misrouted vacuum hoses. Before condemning the computerized system, perform each test listed in this article.
Note. Preform all voltage tests with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm impedance. Unless stated otherwise in test procedure.
VISUAL INSPECTION
Visually inspect all electrical wiring, looking for chafed, stretched, cut or pinched wiring. Check for any blown fuses. Ensure electrical connectors fit tightly and are not corroded. Ensure vacuum hoses are properly routed and not pinched or cut. See VACUUM DIAGRAMS article to verify routing and connections (if necessary). Inspect air induction system for possible vacuum leaks.
Compression
Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or an engine analyzer. See engine analyzer manual for specific instructions.
| WARNING | DO NOT use ignition switch during compression tests on fuel injected vehicles. Use a remote starter switch to crank engine. Fuel injectors on many models are triggered by ignition switch during cranking mode, which can create a fire hazard or contaminate the engine's oiling system. |
Exhaust System Backpressure
The exhaust system can be checked with a vacuum or pressure gauge. If using a pressure gauge, remove oxygen sensor or air injection check valve (if equipped). Connect a 0-5 psi pressure gauge and run engine at 2000 RPM. If exhaust system backpressure is greater than 2 psi, exhaust system or catalytic converter is plugged.
If a vacuum gauge is used, connect vacuum gauge hose to intake manifold vacuum port and start engine. Observe vacuum gauge, while opening throttle part way and hold steady. If vacuum gauge reading slowly drops after stabilizing, check exhaust system for restriction.
FUEL SYSTEM
| WARNING | Always relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components. |
FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE
- Loosen fuel tank filler cap to relieve tank pressure. Remove fuel pump relay from underhood fuse/relay box. Start and operate engine until it stalls. Crank engine an additional 30 seconds.
- Loosen hose clamp of fuel line on side of pressure regulator, coming from fuel line inlet distributor pipe. Cover fuel hose with a shop towel, and slowly pull hose from pressure regulator to relieve fuel pressure. When fuel stops leaking, reinstall hose and clamp.
FUEL PUMP PRESSURE TEST
Note. Begin basic fuel system diagnosis with testing fuel pressure.
- Turn ignition off. Ensure A/C is off (if equipped). Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-testing__fuel-system-pressure-release). Attach Fuel Pressure Gauge Set (J-34730-1 ) to fuel rail or fuel supply line. (Scheme 1) Turn ignition on. Allow fuel pump to run for about 2 seconds. Check fuel pressure. See «FUEL PUMP PERFORMANCE»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-testing) table.
- With engine at normal operating temperature, turn ignition on and let fuel pressure build to maximum pressure. Start engine and observe pressure. See «FUEL PUMP PERFORMANCE»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-testing). If pressure drop is as specified, system is operating properly. If pressure does not drop as specified, see «FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-testing__fuel-system-diagnosis) procedure. Locate and repair leak or restriction in fuel system.

Turn ignition off for about 10 seconds. Turn ignition on. While fuel pump is running, observe fuel gauge. If fuel pressure is 42-55 psi (3.0-3.9 kg/cm 2 ), go to next step. If fuel pressure is not 42-55 psi (3.0-3.9 kg/cm 2 ), go to step 20).
- Repair restriction in fuel return line. Verify system is operating properly.
- Check for restriction in fuel rail outlet passages. Repair as necessary. If there is no restriction, go to step 11).
- If fuel pressure is greater than 0 psi (0 kg/cm 2 ), go to next step. If fuel pressure is not greater than 0 psi (0 kg/cm 2 ), go to step 23). CAUTION: In the next step, DO NOT allow fuel pressure to exceed 60 psi (4.2 kg/cm 2 ), or fuel pressure regulator or fuel pressure gauge may be damaged.
- Using scan tool or 10-amp fused jumper wire connected to fuel pump relay, pressurize fuel system. Using pliers, gradually pinch fuel return hose. If fuel pressure is greater than 55 psi (3.9 kg/cm 2 ), go to step 11). If fuel pressure is not greater than 55 psi (3.9 kg/cm 2 ), go to step 7).
- Using scan tool or 10-amp fused jumper wire connected to fuel pump relay, command fuel pump ON. Remove gas cap, and listen for sound of fuel pump. If fuel pump is running, go to step 7). If fuel pump is not running, go to «FUEL SYSTEM ELECTRICAL TEST»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-basic-testing__fuel-system-electrical-test) .
