TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS (1998)
Transmission & Transfer Case (Except Hombre)
Check fluid level every 7500 miles. Replace lubricant at initial 15,000 service and then at every 30,000 mile interval.
Transmission & Transfer Case (Hombre)
Note. Service intervals for Hombre models are not available.
Transmission (Hombre)
Ensure vehicle is level. Remove fill plug from side of transmission case. Fluid level should be even with bottom of fill plug hole. Add fluid if necessary. Install and tighten fill plug.
Transmission & Transfer Case (Passport, Rodeo, Trooper & SLX)
To check transmission and transfer case, ensure vehicle is level. Remove both fill plugs from transmission case and transfer case. (Scheme 1) Fluid level should be even with bottom of fill plug hole. Add fluid if necessary. Install and tighten fill plugs.

AR-5 & MUA5 Transmission
Use SAE 5W-30 SF engine oil in cold climates and for ambient temperatures up to 95°F (35°C). If temperature is above 50°F (10°C), use SAE 15W-40, 20W-40 or 20W-50 engine oil.
Borg-Warner T5R Transmission
On Rodeo and Passport models equipped with Borg-Warner T5R transmission, use Dexron-III ATF.
NV1500 & NV3500 Transmission
On Hombre models use GM Synchro-Mesh Transmission Fluid (SLF) with 5 percent friction modifier.
Transfer Case (Except Hombre)
Use engine oil SAE 5W-30 for operational temperature range up to 95°F (35°C). Use SAE 15W-40, 20W-40 or 20W-50 for operational temperatures above 50°F (10°C).
Transfer Case (Hombre)
Use Dexron-III ATF.
