DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Nippondenso 3-phase generators use 4 positive and 4 negative diodes to rectify current. An internal Integrated Circuit (IC) voltage regulator controls charging system voltage. Amperage rating is 60 amps (75 amps optional) on manual transmission models and 75 amps on automatic transmission models.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Check generator wiring harness connections and drive belt tension. Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure fuse No. C-8 (15-amp), located in fuse box on left front kick panel is okay.

CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT

  1. Turn ignition on. Charging system light should turn on. If charging system light does not turn on, disconnect generator wiring harness connector. Using a fused jumper wire, ground terminal "L" (White/Green wire) on wiring harness side of connector. (Scheme 1)
  2. If charging system light turns on, perform IC regulator test. See «IC REGULATOR»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/charging-system/#generators-regulators__ic-regulator) under BENCH TESTING. If charging system light does not turn on, check charging system light bulb and replace as necessary. If bulb is okay, repair open in White/Green wire.

GENERATOR/REGULATOR OUTPUT TEST

  1. Disconnect generator wiring harness connector. Turn ignition on. Connect voltmeter between terminal "IG" (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. (Scheme 1) If no voltage exists, check for open in Black/Yellow wire.
  2. Reconnect generator wiring harness connector. Start engine and bring to operating temperature. Connect voltmeter to battery and note voltage. With no load on charging system, increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. If voltage is less than 13 volts or greater than 16 volts, perform IC regulator test. See «IC REGULATOR»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/charging-system/#generators-regulators__ic-regulator) under BENCH TESTING.
  3. Connect ammeter to generator White battery wire. Turn A/C on and blower motor on high. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM. Generator output amperage should be 20-25 amps on manual transmission models and 25 amps on automatic transmission models.

ROTOR

Ensure rotor bearings rotate smoothly. Using ohmmeter check continuity between slip rings and rotor, individually. Check continuity between slip rings and rotor shaft, individually. (Scheme 2) If continuity exists, replace rotor. Check continuity between slip rings. If continuity does not exist replace rotor.

STATOR

Using ohmmeter, check resistance between respective stator leads. (Scheme 3) If resistance is less than one ohm continuity does not exist, replace stator. Check resistance between stator leads and coil core. If resistance is less than 1000 ohms, replace stator.

RECTIFIER DIODES

Note. Use an ohmmeter capable of checking diodes.

  1. Check for continuity between rectifier assembly terminal "B" and terminals P1-P4, and between terminals "E" and P1-P4. (Scheme 4) Note ohmmeter reading.
  2. Reverse leads, and repeat test. Continuity should only be present in one direction. If continuity is not as specified, replace rectifier assembly.

IC REGULATOR

  1. Check for continuity between IC regulator terminals "B" and "F". (Scheme 5) Note ohmmeter reading.
  2. Reverse leads, and repeat test. Continuity should only be present in one direction. If continuity is not as specified, replace IC regulator assembly.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONBefore disconnecting battery, obtain activation code to reset anti-theft stereo (if equipped).

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove front undercover and remove fan belt. Disconnect generator wiring harness connector and White battery wire. Remove generator. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove rear cover. Remove 2 brush holder retaining screws. Remove brush holder. Ensure brushes slide smoothly in holder assembly. Check brush holder and brushes for cracks or other damage. Minimum brush length should be .33" (8.4 mm). If brushes are damaged or worn, replace brush holder assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure.

OVERHAUL

Note. Refer to illustration for exploded view of generator. (Scheme 6)
