Brake Fluid Replacement/Air Bleeding

Brake fluid replacement and air bleeding procedures are identical to the procedures used on vehicles without the VSA system (see MAJOR ADJUSTMENT (TO BE DONE WHEN REPLACING PARKING BRAKE SHOES) ).

Steering Angle Sensor Replacement

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations (see COMPONENT LOCATION INDEX ) and the precautions and procedures (see PRECAUTIONS AND PROCEDURES ) before doing repairs or service.

Note. Do not damage or drop the combination switch as the steering angle sensor is sensitive to shock and vibration.

  1. With the wheels in the straight-ahead position and the steering wheel centered, remove the steering wheel (see «STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL»(ref-513836-S17468943152012111600000) ).
  2. Remove the steering column covers (see «COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513880-S10910171102012111600000) ).
  3. Disconnect the combination light switch 12P connector (A) and the steering angle sensor 5P connector (B) from the combination switch assembly/cable reel (C).
  4. Disconnect the dashboard wire harness 20P connector (A), then remove the dashboard wire harness from the harness holder (B).
  5. Disconnect the wiper/washer switch 8P connector (A), then remove the dashboard wire harness from the harness holder (B).
  6. Remove the harness clip (C), then disconnect the dashboard wire harness 4P connector (D) from the cable reel 4P connector (E).
  7. Remove the combination switch assembly/cable reel mounting screws (A), then remove the combination switch assembly/cable reel (B) from the steering column.
  8. Remove the cable reel (see «CABLE REEL REPLACEMENT»(ref-513859-S32381753432012111600000) ).
  9. Remove the combination light switch (A) and the wiper/washer switch (B) from the combination switch body assembly (C).
  10. Install the combination switch body assembly in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Do not remove the steering angle sensor from the combination switch body assembly. When installing the cable reel, set the turn signal canceling sleeve position so that the arrow points straight up. Note that the tightening order is specified for the combination switch assembly/cable reel mounting screws (see step 1 under «STEERING COLUMN REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513836-S39286178082012111600000) ). Do the steering angle sensor center point writing (see «STEERING ANGLE SENSOR CENTER POINT WRITING»(ref-513874-S40663115132012111600000) ).

Yaw Rate-Lateral Acceleration Sensor Replacement

Note. Do not damage or drop the sensor as it is sensitive. Do not use air or electric impact tools.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. Remove the center console (see «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513885-S18259064932012111600000) ).
  3. Disconnect the yaw rate-lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector (A).
  4. Remove the yaw rate-lateral acceleration sensor mounting bolts (B), then remove the yaw rate-lateral acceleration sensor (C).
  5. Check for deformation in the bracket (D). If necessary replace it.
  6. Install the yaw rate-acceleration sensor in the reverse order of removal.
  7. Do the yaw rate-lateral acceleration neutral position memorization (see «YAW RATE-LATERAL ACCELERATION NEUTRAL POSITION MEMORIZATION»(ref-513841-S34660379562012111600000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. Push out the VSA OFF switch (A) from the switch panel.
  3. Disconnect the VSA OFF switch 5P connector (B).
  4. On the switch side, check for continuity between VSA OFF switch 5P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2. There should be continuity when the button is pressed, and no continuity when the button is released.
  5. Check for continuity between VSA OFF switch 5P connector terminals No. 4 and No. 5. There should be continuity at all times.
  6. Install the VSA OFF switch in the reverse order of removal.

VSA Modulator-Control Unit Removal and Installation

Note. Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint. If brake fluid gets on the paint, wash it off immediately with water.

Note. Be careful not to damage or deform the brake lines during removal and installation. To prevent the brake fluid from dripping, plug and cover the hose ends and joints with a shop towel.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector (A) by pulling up the lever (B); the connector disconnects itself.
  3. Disconnect the six brake lines from the VSA modulator-control unit. NOTE: Brake lines are connected to the master cylinder (C), and to the right-front (D), the left-rear (E), the right-rear (F), and the left-front (G) brake systems.
  4. Remove the VSA modulator-control unit (H) with the bracket (I) from the body.
  5. Remove the locknuts (J), then remove the VSA modulator-control unit from the bracket.

Installation

  1. Install the VSA modulator-control unit on the bracket, then install the new locknuts.
  2. Install the bracket with the VSA modulator-control unit to the body.
  3. Reconnect the six brake lines, then tighten the flare nuts to the specified torque.
  4. Align the connecting surface of the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector to the VSA modulator-control unit.
  5. Pull down the lever of the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector, then confirm the connector is fully seated.
  6. Bleed the brake system (see «MAJOR ADJUSTMENT (TO BE DONE WHEN REPLACING PARKING BRAKE SHOES)»(ref-513835-S17305056422012111600000) ).
  7. Do the steering angle sensor center point writing (see «STEERING ANGLE SENSOR CENTER POINT WRITING»(ref-513874-S40663115132012111600000) ).
  8. Start the engine, and make sure that the ABS and the VSA indicators go off.
  9. Test-drive the vehicle, and make sure that the ABS and the VSA indicators do not come on. NOTE: If the brake pedal is spongy, there may be air trapped in the modulator which could then be induced into the normal brake system during modulation. Bleed the brake system again (see «MAJOR ADJUSTMENT (TO BE DONE WHEN REPLACING PARKING BRAKE SHOES)»(ref-513835-S17305056422012111600000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. Remove the front wheel.
  3. Release the connector holding clamps (A), then disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector (B).
  4. Remove the clips, the bolt, and the wheel speed sensor (C).
  5. Install the wheel speed sensor in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Do not twist the sensor wires. If the wheel speed sensor comes in contact with the wheel bearing, it is faulty. Make sure there is no debris in the sensor mounting hole sensor.
  6. Start the engine, and make sure the ABS and the VSA indicators go off.
  7. Test-drive the vehicle, and make sure the ABS and the VSA indicators do not come on.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. Remove the rear wheel.
  3. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector (A).
  4. Remove the clips, the bolt, and the wheel speed sensor (B).
  5. Install the wheel speed sensor in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Lubricate the O-ring (C) on the wheel speed sensor. Do not twist the sensor wires. If the wheel speed sensor comes in contact with the hub bearing unit, it is faulty. Make sure there is no debris in the sensor mounting hole.
  6. Start the engine, and make sure the ABS and the VSA indicators go off.
  7. Test-drive the vehicle, and make sure the ABS and the VSA indicators do not come on.
