DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
A permanent magnet motor operates each power window. Driver's master switch controls all windows. Passenger switches control only the associated window. If the main switch is in OFF position, only the driver's window operates.
AUTO mode permits driver's window to be fully lowered without holding switch. Pressing switch down to its second detent position will engage AUTO mode, fully lowering window. AUTO function is controlled by an integral pulser within the driver's window motor assembly. The pulser cannot be serviced separately.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
| WARNING | Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy. |
Note. Ensure all component terminals and ground connections are clean and tight. Check possible faults in order listed. Repair or replace components and circuits as necessary. Some wires have been assigned a superscript to distinguish them from other wires of the same color. For example, the Yellow/Green ( 1 ) wire is not the same as the Yellow/Green ( 2 ) wire.
All Windows Do Not Operate
Check fuse No. 14 (20-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Check power window relay in underhood fuse/relay box. Check for poor ground connections. Check for open in White/Red wire between fuse No. 36 (50-amp) and power window relay. Check for open in Black/Yellow wire between ignition switch and fuse No. 14 (20-amp). See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
Driver's Window Does Not Operate
Check fuse No. 5 (20-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Check driver's window motor operation. Check driver's power window master switch. Check window regulator operation. Check driver's power window master switch input. Check for open in White/Yellow wire between fuse No. 5 (20-amp) and driver's power window control unit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
Driver's Window Does Not Operate In AUTO Mode
Check pulser operation (located in driver's window motor). Check driver's power window master switch. Check driver's power window master switch input. Check for open in Blue wire and Black/White wire between driver's power window control unit and driver's window motor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
Right Front Passenger's Window Does Not Operate
Check fuse No. 8 (20-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Check driver's power window master switch. Check passenger's window switch. Check passenger's window motor operation. Check window regulator operation. Check for open in Blue/Black wire between fuse No. 8 (20-amp) and passenger's power window switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
Right Rear Passenger's Window Does Not Operate
Check fuse No. 4 (20-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Check driver's power window master switch. Check passenger's window switch. Check passenger's window motor operation. Check window regulator operation. Check for open in Yellow/Black wire between fuse No. 4 (20-amp) and right rear passenger's power window switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
Left Rear Passenger's Window Does Not Operate
Check fuse No. 7 (20-amp) in underdash fuse/relay box. Check driver's power window master switch. Check passenger's window switch. Check passenger's window motor operation. Check window regulator operation. Check for open in Green/Black wire between fuse No. 7 (20-amp) and left rear passenger's power window switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS.
MOTOR TEST
| CAUTION | When motor stops running, immediately disconnect one jumper wire, or motor may be damaged. |
Driver's Power Window Motor Test (Hatchback)
Remove door panel. Disconnect power window motor 4-pin connector. Using fused jumper wire, connect battery voltage to power window motor 4-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Blue wire). Ground 4-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). (Scheme 1) Motor should run in UP direction. Reverse jumper wires. Motor should run in DOWN direction. Replace motor if it does not run smoothly in both directions.
Driver's Power Window Motor Test (Sedan)
Remove door panel. Disconnect power window motor 4-pin connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect battery voltage to power window motor 4-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). Ground 4-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Blue wire). (Scheme 1) Motor should run in UP direction. Reverse jumper wires. Motor should run in DOWN direction. Replace motor if it does not run smoothly in both directions.
Scheme 1
Passenger's Power Window Motor Test
Remove door panel. Disconnect power window motor 2-pin connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect battery voltage to power window connector terminal No. 2 (Blue/White wire). Ground power window connector terminal No. 1 (Blue/Red wire). (Scheme 2) Motor should run in UP direction. Reverse jumper wires. Motor should run in DOWN direction. Replace motor if it does not operate in both directions.
Scheme 2
POWER WINDOW RELAY TEST
Remove power window relay from underhood fuse/relay box. Check for continuity between terminals "A" and "B". Continuity should not exist. Using jumper wires, connect terminals "C" and "D" to battery voltage and ground. (Scheme 3) If continuity does not exist between terminals "A" and "B", replace relay.
Scheme 3
PULSER TEST (DRIVER'S WINDOW MOTOR)
Note. Pulser is integral part of driver's window motor assembly. If pulser is defective, replace motor assembly.
Connect test leads of analog ohmmeter to driver's power window motor 4-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Blue wire) and terminal No. 4 (Black wire). Using jumper wires, connect battery voltage to 4-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Blue wire) and ground to terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). (Scheme 1) If ohmmeter needle does not swing back and forth while motor operates, replace motor.
POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH INPUT TEST
Note. Some wires have been assigned a superscript to distinguish them from other wires of the same color. For example, the Yellow/Green( 1 ) wire is not the same as the Yellow/Green( 2 ) wire.
Turn ignition off. Remove driver's door panel. Disconnect power window master switch connector(s). Inspect connector(s) and terminals for damage, corrosion and proper fit. Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If connector(s) are okay, using a DVOM, perform appropriate power window master switch input test. (Scheme 4)or (Scheme 5). If all input tests are okay and power windows still do not operate properly, replace power window master switch.

Master Switch
Remove power window master switch. See WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between specified switch terminals with switch in specified position. See POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH TEST table. (Scheme 6)or (Scheme 7). If continuity is not as specified, replace switch.
Note. Driver's power window switch is integrated with control unit and cannot be isolated for testing. On hatchback (2-door) models, perform tests No. 1, 2, 3, and 5. On sedan (4-door) models, perform tests No. 1, 2, 3 and 7. See POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH INPUT TEST. (Scheme 4)or (Scheme 5). If inputs are normal and driver's power window switch does not operate properly, replace power window master switch assembly.
