EGR Function Testing - Acura Acura ILX I

1986-87 (Ported EGR Valve)

  1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Disconnect EGR valve vacuum hose, and connect a hand-held vacuum pump to valve. Start engine. Apply at least 6 in. Hg to EGR valve. If engine stalls and EGR valve holds vacuum, EGR valve is functioning properly.
  2. Connect a vacuum gauge to EGR hose. Pinch vacuum hose between air intake and EGR control solenoid. Start engine. EGR vacuum hose should have vacuum with engine running. Release pinched vacuum hose. Vacuum should not be present at EGR vacuum hose.

1988-95 (Ported EGR Valve)

  1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Disconnect EGR valve vacuum hose, and connect a hand-held vacuum pump to EGR valve. Start engine. Apply at least 6 in. Hg to EGR valve.
  2. If engine stalls and gauge holds vacuum, EGR valve is functioning properly. Connect a vacuum gauge to EGR hose. Increase engine speed to about 3000 RPM. If vacuum is shown on gauge, system is functioning properly.
