WITHOUT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

Note. Never handle the halfshaft assembly by the inner or outer boots (2). This can cause damage to the boot, which will allow contaminants to enter the C/V joint.

Note. The inner tripod joint (1) is designed with a retention feature that prevents the tripod rollers from coming out of the inner joint housing up to a specific load. If this feature is overcome and the rollers are pulled past the retention feature the joint will lock up and no longer function properly. The entire halfshaft assembly (4) must be replaced if this occurs.

  1. Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-646212-S02251014372014072800000) .
  3. Using a suitable punch, lift the two staked areas in the hub nut to avoid damaging the halfshaft.
  4. While a helper applies the brakes to keep the hub from rotating, remove the hub nut (1) from the halfshaft (2) and discard it. The used hub nut is not reusable.
  5. If equipped, remove the engine belly pan. Refer to «BELLY PAN, REMOVAL»(ref-646214-S24731623582014072800000) .
  6. Remove clinch bolt (1) holding the knuckle (4) to the lower control arm (3) ball joint.
  7. Pry the lower control arm (3) downward until ball joint stud clears the knuckle (1). NOTE: The halfshaft may stick in the hub bearing during removal. A dead-blow or plastic hammer can be used to tap the halfshaft inward and out of the hub bearing.
  8. Swing the steering knuckle (1) outward and off the halfshaft end.
  9. Place a drain pan under the transaxle to catch fluid that may spill from differential seal when the halfshaft is removed.
  10. Hold the halfshaft up and remove support stand.
  11. Slip the halfshaft shaft from the differential seal.
  12. Separate the halfshaft from the vehicle.

Scheme 26: WITH INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

  1. Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-646212-S02251014372014072800000) .
  3. Using a suitable punch, lift the two staked areas in the hub nut to avoid damaging the halfshaft.

  6. Remove bolts holding intermediate support bearing (6) to the engine bracket.
  7. Separate the bearing bracket (6) from the engine support bracket and support the halfshaft on a suitable stand.
  8. Remove clinch bolt (1) holding the knuckle (4) to the lower control arm (3) ball joint.
  9. Pry the lower control arm (3) downward until ball joint stud (2) clears the knuckle (1). NOTE: The halfshaft may stick in the hub bearing during removal. A dead-blow or plastic hammer can be used to tap the halfshaft inward and out of the hub bearing.

  1. Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.
  2. Position the halfshaft under the vehicle and over the lower control arm.
  3. Slip the halfshaft shaft into the differential seal and lightly twist until intermediate shaft slides all the way into the differential.
  4. Swing the steering knuckle (1) outward and engage the halfshaft end into the hub bearing spline.
  5. Push the lower control arm (3) downward until ball joint stud (2) can enter the bottom of the knuckle.
  6. Insert the ball joint stud (2) into the knuckle (1) until the bolt hole lines-up with the groove in the ball joint stud.
  7. Install a NEW pinch bolt and NEW nut (1) to hold the knuckle (4) to the lower control arm (3) ball joint stud. Refer to «FRONT, SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-646210-S14651294902014072800000).
  8. Remove support stand from under the halfshaft.
  9. If equipped, install the engine belly pan. Refer to «BELLY PAN, INSTALLATION»(ref-646214-S07994234782014072800000). NOTE: Always install a new hub nut. The original hub nut is one-time use only and must be discarded when removed.
  10. Install a NEW hub nut and while a helper applies the brakes, tighten the nut to 200 N.m (148 ft. lbs.) NOTE: Do not use air tools on staking tool while staking hub nut.
  11. Using the staking tool (special tool #10287, Tool, Front Hub Staking), align the leading cutting edge of tool with the top left side channel on axle as shown in the illustration (1). Tighten fastener on staking tool with hand tools until the threads bottom out completely. NOTE: The hub nut must be staked so that it looks similar to (Scheme 27). Both edges must be split and bent into the shape shown in the illustration (3). The staking must be in the opposite direction from the forward rotation of the wheel.
  12. Install the wheel and tire assembly on the vehicle. Refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-646212-S30999901622014072800000).
  13. Lower the vehicle and road test to verify the repair.

WITH INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

  1. Raise vehicle on a suitable hoist.
  2. Position the halfshaft under the vehicle and over the lower control arm.
  3. Slip the halfshaft shaft into the differential seal and lightly twist until intermediate shaft slides all the way into the differential.
  4. Hold the halfshaft up and place a support stand under the halfshaft to avoid damaging the halfshaft.
  5. Swing the steering knuckle (1) outward and engage the halfshaft end into the hub bearing spline.
  6. Push the lower control arm (3) downward until ball joint stud (2) can enter the bottom of the knuckle.
  7. Insert the ball joint stud (2) into the knuckle (1) until the bolt hole lines-up with the groove in the ball joint stud.
  8. Install a NEW pinch bolt and NEW nut (1) to hold the knuckle (4) to the lower control arm (3) ball joint stud. Refer to «FRONT, SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-646210-S14651294902014072800000).
  9. Position the intermediate bearing bracket (6) onto the engine support bracket and align the bolt holes.
  10. Install bolts to hold intermediate support bearing (6) to the engine bracket. Refer to «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-646219-S23100424442014072800000).
  11. Remove support stand from under the halfshaft.
  12. If equipped, install the engine belly pan. Refer to «BELLY PAN, INSTALLATION»(ref-646214-S07994234782014072800000). NOTE: Always install a new hub nut. The original hub nut is one-time use only and must be discarded when removed.
  13. Install a NEW hub nut and while a helper applies the brakes, tighten the nut to 200 N.m (148 ft. lbs.) NOTE: Do not use air tools on staking tool while staking hub nut.
  14. Using the staking tool (special tool #10287, Tool, Front Hub Staking), align the leading cutting edge of tool with the top left side channel on axle as shown in the illustration (1). Tighten fastener on staking tool with hand tools until the threads bottom out completely. NOTE: The hub nut must be staked so that it looks similar to see scheme 21. Both edges must be split and bent into the shape shown in the illustration (3). The staking must be in the opposite direction from the forward rotation of the wheel.
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly on the vehicle. Refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-646212-S30999901622014072800000).
  16. Lower the vehicle and road test to verify the repair.
